As we have been away from a little while, Adonica and I decided to have a lovely little chat to introduce Season 3. We discussed 2019, keeping the balls afloat, dealing with unexpected circumstances, practising self-care and of course MONEY.  We also reflected on previous podcast episodes (Maggie Semple, Tahlia Gray, Collette Phillip/Harriet Minter and the practical actions we took from these podcast.

We also discussed the popup - Adonica asked Janet lots of questions about this.  Janet discussed planning, a bit of 'behind-the-scenes' stuff, our favourite pop up shop moments.  Janet discussed the PR we received. the incredible process of working with fave Deborah T Johnson and fabulous team work and expertise. Ultimately there are no shortcuts. Janet needed to do the work to increase the probability of getting press coverage and the incomparable Deborah brought in her expertise and advice that was needed.

We loved our chat with Florence Adepoju, founder of beauty brand MDM Flow. A lover of hip-hop culture and audacious expression, Florence wanted to create a beauty brand that wasn’t afraid to be bold, while representing and serving women of colour.  In our chat, she discussed how a controversial change of degree course led to a placement in Antwerp, Belgium and how this experience opened her eyes to start-up culture. She spoke to us about taking production into her own hands (literally!) resulting in building a beauty lab in her back garden shed. Florence shares how she has leveraged her online community and how this can give you the upper hand in negotiating retail deals. She also discussed her New York Times feature, how that came about and how she prepared for that.

Here’s what you’ll learn this episode:

3.01 – beauty brand faux pas in creating formulas that work on black skin, and how to correct them

5.05 – turning a final year degree project into a business and the importance of work experience in figuring out what you want from a career

Simthy1432 ,

A Fantastic Podcast!

I stumbled across this podcast by accident and ended up listening to every single episode over a couple of days. The women they’ve interviewed are truly inspiring and (as a budding small business owner) I’ve picked up a good number of tips!

I love the concept of “money money money money” - where the guests outline all of their current income streams. Usually people keep that information close to their chest so its very refreshing to know this information and to get advice on potential avenues I could also explore.

This podcast is like a “virtual mentor”, I love the ‘for women by women’ theme and the presenters are very personable, friendly and funny.

A fantastic podcast!

This podcast is a breath of fresh air! Black women talking about money. It’s insightful and entertaining and one of my faves. I look forward to each new episode.
