Comedian Michael Ian Black is tackling a great work of literature. Actually, Tackling might be too strong a word. More like “light caressing” plus a lot of complaining. He’s reading the Thomas Hardy classic, Jude the Obscure, out loud and commenting as he goes. Join Michael and friends like Jen Kirkman, Mike Birbiglia, Michael Showalter, and even his teenage daughter, as he discovers the world of Victorian England. Is it a terrible idea? Probably. But it’s a terrible idea he wants to do with you.

Bloody great

Being far too lazy to sit down and read a classic myself, this is the closest I’ll ever get to being a high brow member of society.

The commentary is hilarious and (occasionally) insightful, the guests are excellent and the accents are all wrong. I really can’t find fault with this podcast... except more Jack Jack would be appreciated.

Just stick to the story

It's great to listen to the story with some funny commentary but for me there's far too much peripheral stuff going on here. Also, why does this ACTOR think a Wessex accent is somewhere between Irish and Scottish? Really annoying, as are some of his strange American pronunciations.

I appreciate the Jill Schwartz Memorial Library policy on dogs

It took me way longer than it should have to realise that the Jill Schwartz memorial library is not yet an official public library! I wish all libraries allowed unfortunate dogs like Jack Jack. I love this podcast and look forward to every episode. I am both high brow and lazy, as a child I would get my older sister to read classics by Charles Dickens and Alexander Dumas etc and “tell me what happened” at the end of each chapter. This podcast always leaves me with the warm feeling of taking advantage of a loved one.
