S1: Ep8: Mike McIntyre: My Shadow!

S1: Ep8: Mike McIntyre: My Shadow!

This is the way I always wanted to close the first series; by speaking to my shadow, my hero, my inspiration... my Dad!  Mike McIntyre overcame devastating defeat at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to win gold, against the odds, at Seoul 1988.  For my whole life, I've wanted to emulate his achievement and, in Tokyo in 2021, I managed to win my own Olympic Sailing gold.  Two in one household!  I know, crazy!   We've never properly sat down to talk about the significance of it; how I felt growing up in his shadow, how he felt when I achieved my dream.  It's time to put that right!  Standby for some emotional moments plus some low-budget adventures of being an under-funded athlete in the 1980s!

Thanks for listening to series one of "Out of the Shadows" in association with Quote Search, a NinetyFour19 production.  Please check out previous episodes in the series and leave a review, if you can, wherever you get your podcasts.  Thanks and Happy Christmas!

S1:Ep3: Chemmy Alcott: Chasing Dreams, Building Brands.

S1:Ep3: Chemmy Alcott: Chasing Dreams, Building Brands.

On Episode Three, Eilidh's joined by Britain's most recognisable skier; the amazing Chemmy Alcott!   Like the other guests on this series, she's had to force her way out of the shadows (both of her parents were distinguished athletes) but fuelled by an insatiable desire to carve a career in a niche sport and succeed where so many would fail, Chemmy conquered many metaphorical mountains.  Perhaps more familiar these days as the face of BBC's Ski Sunday, Chemmy has lived a remarkable life; full of incredible dreams and devastating setbacks.    She tells Eilidh about leaving home as a child to train on the other side of the world, the time she brokered her own sponsorship deal after school (while still in uniform!) and how early success somehow proved a barrier to taking the next step.  And when the subject turns to injuries, it's as hard to keep track of the serious traumas as it is to believe the comebacks Chemmy has engineered.  She joins Olympic sailing gold medalist Eilidh Mcintyre to tell the remarkable, full story.   A NinetyFour19 production in association with Quote Search.
