PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 63: An Early Exit for the Penguins

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 63: An Early Exit for the Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ season has come to another abrupt end. Losing to the New York Islanders in six games while largely playing the better hockey over the course of the series is sure to sting for some time.
But the team has to move forward.
While another season has come and gone with no championship for Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang, that doesn't mean it was a complete failure of a campaign, either. As the core gets older by another year, even more questions are going to be asked about the team’s veteran stars.
Will Malkin and Letang receive contract extensions or have they played their final games in the black-and-gold colors of Pittsburgh? What will happen with Tristan Jarry after a legendarily bad postseason run? Is Mike Sullivan’s time as head coach up?
These are all topics that are sure to be discussed as summer kicks into full gear. And the PensBurgh Podcast is here, for one final time this season, to put a bow on this memorable crusade that was the 2021 Pittsburgh Penguins season.
Robbie and I discuss what the Penguins may change before the 2021-22 season, both in terms of player personnel and, perhaps, coaching positions as well.
This week’s mailbag is stacked from top to bottom with eleven questions thanks to our loyal Twitter users and listeners.
For those who may read this and listen to this podcast, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has taken even a second to download, listen, review, or ask a question for this show. The PensBurgh Podcast has been the project that I am most proud of working on since joining PensBurgh almost five years ago, and the show wouldn't be where it is today if not for the great listeners who enjoy the content Robbie and I put out. I hope I have done my job of both informing and entertaining anyone who listened to the show during this crazy season.
The podcast will return later this summer, likely around the time NHL free agency begins. So, for now, thanks for listening, enjoy the podcast, and Let’s Go Pens.

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 62: Reviewing Games 1 & 2 of the Penguins-Islanders series

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 62: Reviewing Games 1 & 2 of the Penguins-Islanders series

Through the first two games of this opening round series, the Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves tied at one game apiece with the New York Islanders. Even though both teams have a game to their name, there are still several areas in need of improvement if the Penguins wish to close this series out on their terms.
Whether it’s going a combined 0-5 on the power-play, an inability to finish odd-man rushes, or giving up 79 shots on goal through two games, these Penguins are far from perfect. Robbie and I are here to give our thoughts on Games 1 and 2, as well as try to figure out what the team can do to fix some of these issues.
In addition to the main topic, this week’s mailbag doesn't hold anything back, either. We’re answering questions about lifelong NHL bans, Tristan Jarry’s performances, former Penguins players, and much more:

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 61: Previewing the Penguins-Islanders First-Round Series

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 61: Previewing the Penguins-Islanders First-Round Series

Are you ready? The Pittsburgh Penguins are gearing up for another run at the Stanley Cup.
With the regular season finally complete and the playoffs yet to kick off, the PensBurgh Podcast is here to preview this round one series. Will the New York Islanders spoil the Penguins’ hopes, reminiscent of 2019 postseason? Or will these fully healthy flightless birds advance to the second round for the first time since 2018?
Here’s the agenda for this week’s special playoff primer:

We recap the final regular season games against the Buffalo Sabres

The main topic this week: Previewing NYI-PIT. The Penguins went 6-2 against the Islanders in the regular season series. The Penguins also averaged 3.25 goals per game against the Islanders in the regular season series as well. With the Islanders playing, what is best described as a “boring, low-event, 2—1-esque” style of hockey, what can the Penguins do to ensure they come out of this series as the victors?

We also pick Round One X Factors, highlighting one player who will make the biggest difference for the Pens in this series.

To close out the playoff preview, Robbie and I also give our series winner prediction.

And, of course, we can't forget about the mailbag. This week’s mailbag sees Robbie and I look back on the 2021 regular season, wondering what former general manager Jim Rutherford might have done differently, looking ahead to this summer’s expansion draft, and much more:

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 60: The Penguins are in the playoffs; examining Bryan Rust's transformation

The Pittsburgh Penguins have clinched a playoff spot for the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs.
    Huzzah.
The PensBurgh Podcast is here to break down all the action from the last few games and assess what these flightless birds look like as they head into battle for Lord Stanley’s mighty chalice.
This week’s episode also examines Bryan Rust, and the transformation the 28-year-old Michigander has made, going from complementary NHL depth player to premier goalscorer. How has Rust made such a transition, seemingly overnight?
The mailbag segment is locked in loaded this week, with many podcast listeners eager to get their answers regarding the latest Tom Wilson saga. How might the Penguins respond if and when they meet up with the Washington Capitals in the postseason?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 59: Will the Penguins have enough energy for the playoffs?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 59: Will the Penguins have enough energy for the playoffs?

It looks like the Pittsburgh Penguins are rounding into form at just the right time. Head coach Mike Sullivan is pressing all the right buttons and his players are responding by racking up the points in the division standings. With just six games to go now before the playoffs begin, including a two-game series starting tonight against the Washington Capitals that will likely decide the East Division champion, the Penguins could not be in a better spot.
Add into the mix an Evgeni Malkin that is set to return from injury, and we may have the final ingredient of the recipe for a team that is ready to go on a deep playoff run.
    Or will they?
This week’s PensBurgh Podcast examines the likelihood that the Penguins will run out of gas when it matters most—during the Stanley Cup playoffs. With games being played at a breakneck pace since February, will the grind of a truncated, 56-game schedule in five months catch up to these Penguins?
This week’s mailbag also sees Robbie and I discuss a potential Evgeni Malkin trade, our favorite goals in franchise history, best and worst first-round matchups, and much more.

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 58: Is Tristan Jarry still the go-to goalie?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 58: Is Tristan Jarry still the go-to goalie?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have delivered a bit of a mixed bag over the last seven days. A shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, a regulation loss to the Buffalo Sabres and an almost legendary collapse at the hands of the New Jersey Devils shows that these Penguins are not perfect.
However, the team still sits in third place in the East Division with nine games to go before the playoffs begin. And players like Kasperi Kapanen and Evgeni Malkin are inching closer to a return.
This week’s episode highlights goaltender Tristan Jarry, and whether or not the 25-year-old’s recent play warrants any kind of skepticism as the team’s number one netminder with this squad looking to make another long run through the postseason.
The mailbag segment sees Robbie and I delve into the world of professional sports chants, reminiscing about other collapses throughout franchise history, talking about the expansion draft, and wondering what next year’s Penguins team might look like.
