PFDW#23 Interview with Omar El-Akkad author of American War Postcards from a Dying World

    • Books

In this episode of Postcards from a Dying World I talk to the author of the novel American War Omar El-Akkad. This novel is a Cli-fi Dystopia about a second American civil war that stands as a political allegory for Omar to shine a light on the War on Terrorism.

Omar El Akkad was born in Egypt, grew up in Qatar, moved to Canada as a  teenager and now lives in the United States. As a journalist, he covered the war on terror on the ground. For the next decade he reported from Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay and many other locations around the world. His work earned a National Newspaper  Award for Investigative Journalism and the Goff Penny Award for young journalists.

This interview was recorded on the Sunday before the American election and Omar's insight into global conflict is important if you have read American War or not. I think the book is a great read but the interview is interesting just as much for Omar's wide experience as a journalist. What does cover the War on Terrorism on the ground tell us about the current knife's edge America is balanced on?
