Thirty-Five. And Thirty-Six

OTD E0316 — 12 Sep 1885: Dundee Harp beat Aberdeen Rovers 35–0 in the Scottish Cup — after their referee thought it was 37. Eighteen miles away, Arbroath beat Bon Accord 36–0. We trace the Scottish Cup’s birth, John Petrie’s 13 goals, Tom O’Kane’sboastful telegram and 18-mile run, the Bon Accord cricket-team myth, the clubs’ later fates and football’s other impossible scorelines. The Kid Who Became Italy’s First Superstar

OTD E0315 — 11 Sep 1927: Seventeen-year-old Giuseppe Meazza makes his Inter first-team debut in Como’s Coppa Alessandro Volta and scores twice. We trace the Milan street kid rejected for being too small, Árpád Weisz, the birth of Serie A, two World Cups and Meazza’s enormous celebrity — plus the extraordinary same-day coincidence of Como’s physics congress, Niels Bohr, the Bohr family’s football past and quantum mechanics. Jock Stein’s Last Match

OTD E0314 — 10 Sep 1985: Wales and Scotland meet at Ninian Park with Mexico 1986 hanging on one result. Mark Hughes scores, Jim Leighton loses a contact lens, Jock Stein makes one final inspired substitution and Davie Cooper equalizes from the spot. Then, moments before full-time, Stein collapses. We trace Wales’ years of qualifying heartbreak, Stein’s journey from the coal mines to Lisbon, Alex Ferguson’s inheritance, and a night when Scotland’s World Cup lifeline became national mourning. The Old Lady in Serie B

OTD E0313 — 09 Sep 2006: Juventus begin the most improbable league season in their history — away at Rimini, in Serie B, starting on minus 17 points after Calciopoli. We trace Italian football’s scandal history from Totonero to Moggi’s intercepted calls, the World Cup-winning squad torn apart by relegation, the stars who stayed, Rimini’s ten-man equalizer, Juve’s immediate return — and how two stripped Scudetti later turned the club’s famous gold stars into an argument about who gets to count history. The Day Football Got a Season

OTD E0312 — 08 Sep 1888: Five matches. Twenty-three goals. One invention that changes football forever. We reconstruct the first Saturday of the Football League — Kenny Davenport’s newly rediscovered first goal, Gershom Cox’s first own goal, Bolton blowing a 3–0 lead, Preston beginning their Invincible season and Everton playing at Anfield — then trace William McGregor, rival leagues, promotion and relegation, and how one Victorian fixture list became football’s global operating system. The First Merdeka

OTD E0311 — 07 Sep 1957: A Hong Kong League XI beats South Vietnam 3–1 to win the first Merdeka Tournament, just one week after Malaya declares independence in the same Kuala Lumpur stadium. We trace Tunku Abdul Rahman, the rise of organized Asian football, eight invited teams, Eastern’s extraordinary touring side, the chaotic 1957 tournament — and how an independence celebration became Asia’s oldest international invitational football tournament. Ideas: otd@17lawsguy.com

The Scorpion Kick

OTD E0310 — 06 Sep 1995: René “El Loco” Higuita turns a harmless Jamie Redknapp ball into football immortality with the Scorpion Kick at Wembley. We trace the Colombian’s extraordinary journey from Medellín to Libertadores glory, Roger Milla’s 1990 punishment, prison and comeback, then place Higuita among goalkeeping’s great originals — Grobbelaar, Schmeichel, Campos, Chilavert, Ceni and Dudek — and ask how yesterday’s madman helped anticipate today’s ball-playing goalkeeper. The Prince of Goalkeepers

OTD E0309 — 05 Sep 1931: Rangers and Celtic are drawing 0–0 at Ibrox when 22-year-old Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper John Thomson dives at the feet of Rangers striker Sam English. English’s knee catches Thomson’s head. The collision is entirely accidental — but Thomson dies later that night. We trace the remarkable young goalkeeper’s rise, the Old Firm world around him, the devastating effect on English, the tens of thousands who mourned Thomson, and football’s long journey from an era without substitutes or concussion protocols to the very different response to Petr Čech’s frighteningly similar skull injury in 2006. Champions of Two Worlds

OTD E0308 — 04 Sep 1960: Real Madrid and Peñarol meet at the Bernabéu to decide the first Intercontinental Cup — champions of Europe against the newly crowned champions of South America. Real score three times inside nine minutes and win 5–1. We trace the Copa Rio prototype, the birth of the European Cup and Libertadores, the administrators who connected the continents, two genuine football superpowers, the competition’s descent into violence and boycotts, its Toyota Cup rescue in Japan, FIFA’s eventual takeover and the enormous Club World Cup ecosystem that grew from one simple idea: who is the best club in the world? El Maracanazo: The Flare That Never Hit Him

OTD E0307 — 03 Sep 1989: Brazil and Chile meet at the Maracanã with a World Cup place at stake. Brazil lead 1–0 when a green signal flare lands beside Chile goalkeeper Roberto Rojas. He collapses bleeding, Chile walk off and suddenly Brazil’s qualification is in jeopardy. Except the flare never touched him. We trace the poisonous qualifying campaign, Rojas’s extraordinary deception, the photographs that exposed it, FIFA’s severe punishment and why the scandal remains one of football’s most audacious attempts to turn stadium safety into sporting advantage. Gold After 39 Minutes

OTD E0306 — 02 Sep 1920: Less than two years after the First World War, international football is trying to rebuild itself at the Antwerp Olympics. Belgium and the newly created Czechoslovakia reach the gold-medal match — but after Belgium score twice and Karel Steiner is sent off, the Czechoslovaks walk off after only 39 minutes. We trace FIFA’s postwar crisis, Jules Rimet’s emerging World Cup vision, Spain and Ricardo Zamora’s extraordinary debut, the bizarre Bergvall tournament format, 65-year-old referee John Lewis, the abandoned final and the gold medal that remains Belgium’s only major men’s international title. The Game of Three Halves

OTD E0305 — 01 Sep 1894: Sunderland officially beat Derby County 8–0 on the opening day of the Football League season. But they actually score eleven goals — because the teams play 135 minutes. When the appointed referee misses his railway connection at York, local official John Conqueror starts the match and Sunderland lead 3–0 at halftime. Then the real referee arrives, wipes those 45 minutes away and orders the League match to start again. We reconstruct football’s famous “Game of Three Halves,” meet Sunderland’s Team of All Talents and a young Steve Bloomer, and explain why modern football should never have to repeat the experiment. The Match Nobody Wanted to Win

OTD E0304 — 31 Aug 1998: Thailand and Indonesia meet at the 1998 Tiger Cup knowing something awkward: finishing second may be better than finishing first. The group winner must face hosts Vietnam in Hanoi; the runner up gets supposedly weaker Singapore in Ho Chi Minh City. So neither side particularly wants to win — until Indonesian defender Mursyid Effendi deliberately scores into his own net to hand Thailand a 3–2 victory. We trace the birth of the Tiger Cup, reconstruct one of international football’s strangest matches, examine the line between sporting strategy and match manipulation, and discover the perfect ending: Singapore go on to win the tournament anyway. Too Unequal to Continue

OTD E0303 — 30 Aug 1931: Argentina is only three months into its first professional football season when Estudiantes de La Plata race into an 8-0 lead over Lanús. With more than twenty minutes still to play, Lanús captain Edmundo Piaggio asks referee Lorenzo Martínez to end the punishment — and Martínez does. We trace the player strike and breakaway league that created Argentine professionalism, meet Estudiantes’ legendary Los Profesores, revisit the referee who once punched a player, examine what the 1931 Laws actually allowed, and ask whether a professional football match should ever end simply because the teams are too unequal. The Day the Goal Broke

OTD E0302 — 29 Aug 1970: Swindon Town are beating Sunderland 2–0 when Sunderland’s Bobby Kerr breaks one of the County Ground crossbars. Groundsmen repair it and the match continues — exactly as the Laws allowed. We use one broken goal to trace football’s target from pre-1863 strings and uprights through the crossbar, goal nets, wood and aluminium, Gladbach’s famous 1971 collapse, Saint-Étienne’s square-post agony in 1976, Argentina’s colored World Cup goals and the surprisingly detailed requirements of Law 1 today. The Wandering Genius

OTD E0301 — 28 Aug 1981: Béla Guttmann dies in Vienna. A Jewish Hungarian player, Holocaust survivor, tactical revolutionary and relentless football nomad, Guttmann carried Central European ideas around the world — through Vienna, New York, Brazil, Portugal and beyond. We trace Jimmy Hogan and the Hungarian coaching school, Guttmann’s unlikely connection to Imre Hirschl, his influence on Brazil’s 4–2–4, the discovery of Eusébio, Benfica’s back-to back European Cups — and why the famous “curse” may never have been spoken at all. Rain Is The Winner

OTD E0300 — 27 Aug 1960: Manchester City and Manchester United serve up four goals in 56 minutes at Maine Road. Then a thunderstorm turns the pitch into standing water. One of the world’s most celebrated referees, Arthur Ellis, stops the match, gets booed, leaves under police escort — and eventually abandons the derby at 2–2. We reconstruct the game, trace how football’s Laws have dealt with weather and abandoned matches, meet some wonderfully bizarre precedents, and discover what happened when City and United finally tried again six months later. A League With a Future

OTD E0299 — 26 Aug 2005: Carl Veart heads home the first goal in A League history as Australian football launches yet another national competition. This time, it lasts. We trace the migrant clubs and NSL that built the foundations, Australia’s strange life in Oceania, the Crawford reforms, Frank Lowy and John O’Neill’s reset, and a league designed using ideas from MLS, Japan and Australian sport. Then: Asia, six straight World Cups, the Socceroos pathway — and whether the A-League has actually transformed Australian football. Ideas: otd@17lawsguy.com

Football By Numbers

OTD E0298 — 25 Aug 1928: Arsenal and Chelsea bring numbered shirts into English league football. But Herbert Chapman did not invent the idea — the trail runs through rugby, Australia and New Zealand decades earlier, while American football was experimenting too. We trace how numbers went from simple identifiers to positions, identities and eventually mythology: 1, 5, 7, 9, 10, Cruyff’s 14, CR7 — and the numbers clubs decided nobody should ever wear again. Erster Spieltag

OTD E0297 — 24 Aug 1963: The Bundesliga finally kicks off. Timo Konietzka scores its first goal after just 58 seconds — before five o’clock has technically arrived — and eight matches launch a league that will reshape German football. We revisit the controversial selection of the original sixteen clubs, walk through every opening-day game, meet the surviving heroes of 1954, and trace the Bundesliga from seven different champions in seven years through Bayern, Gladbach, German reunification and today. Three Names, One Stadium

OTD E0296 — 23 Aug 1930: Brussels opens a vast new stadium for Belgium’s centenary. It becomes the home of the Red Devils, a centerpiece of the 1935 World Expo, one of European football’s great final venues — and eventually the Heysel Stadium of 1985. We follow the ground from Jubilee to Heysel to King Baudouin, including the royal family connection, the tragedy that killed 39 people, the reconstruction, and its remarkable reopening exactly 65 years after its first day. Ideas: otd@17lawsguy.com

Football Comes to the Sofa

OTD E0295 — 22 Aug 1964: Liverpool beat Arsenal 3–2 — and about 20,000 viewers watch the first-ever Match of the Day. We trace football from Victorian newspapers through radio and television, go behind the scenes with Bryan Cowgill, Alan Hardaker and the frantic BBC2 production team, follow English football onto Danish television, and trace the extraordinary journey from fears that TV would empty stadiums to £6.7bn rights deals, Peacock in America and record Premier League crowds. Ideas: otd@17lawsguy.com

The Substitute Arrives

OTD E0294 — 21 Aug 1965: Eleven minutes into Bolton–Charlton, goalkeeper Mike Rose is injured and Keith Peacock becomes the first substitute used in Football League history. We trace why football resisted replacements for almost a century, how injuries could cost players money as well as matches, the IFAB debates that finally opened Law III — and how the substitute evolved from emergency replacement into a tactical weapon capable of winning football’s biggest finals. Ideas: otd@17lawsguy.com

The National Team Born Abroad

OTD E0293 — 20 Aug 1916: In Stockholm, the United States plays its first official international — and beats Sweden 3–2. We trace American soccer from the factory teams of Kearny and the unofficial Canada matches of 1885 86 through Thomas Cahill, Bethlehem Steel and the creation of U.S. Soccer, then cross the wartime Atlantic for the extraordinary 1916 Scandinavian tour — before asking why American men’s soccer has spent so much of its history starting over. All 22 Went to Jail

OTD E0292 — 19 Aug 1950: Vélez lead Huracán 3–1 with five minutes remaining when two players begin throwing punches. Within moments, all 22 are involved. The referee disappears, police enter the field, the match is suspended — and every player is detained and sent to Villa Devoto. We reconstruct one of Argentine football’s strangest afternoons, the enormous AFA punishments that followed, the game’s long attempt to control mass violence, and why the uncomfortable debate still resonates after the 2026 World Cup final.
