PonderMed #21: Two pilots, one doctor... at the Grand Round

PonderMed #21: Two pilots, one doctor... at the Grand Round

Captain Alexander Jolly and Captain Dave Fielding are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS.

For the last few months they (along with a few of their colleagues) have been helping us train. Specifically, they are debriefing and writing up human factors performances (overseen by clinical faculty) in a multi-specialty/disciplinary in situ simulation programme. The project has had a hugely positive impact.

This is a recording of Alex, Dave and me discussing the project at our weekly hospital Grand Round.

PonderMed #20: Two pilots, one doctor

Captain Dave Fielding and Captain Alexander Jolly are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS.
We met up over a coffee in the Whittington Hospital "First Class Lounge" and compared notes on our respective professions. In particular we discussed human factors and simulation training. Alex recently attended a sim in the Emergency Department which you can read about here.
    This one is a corker!

PonderMed #17 Lt. Col. Dave Grossman: A Warrior's Toolbox

PonderMed #17 Lt. Col. Dave Grossman: A Warrior's Toolbox

This is the first of two pods I've recorded with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman - a former US Army Ranger, paratrooper, and Psychology Professor.
He is the author of On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace; a book that describes coping strategies for the physiological and psychological effects of violence for people forced to kill in their line of work.
On Combat has become a popular book in the Emergency Medicine community. It turns out there are plenty of parallels between the sharp-end of healthcare and the battlefield. This podcast put On Combat on the EM map.
This is my talk titled My Mental Toughness Manifesto which On Combat had a huge influence on.
In this first episode we discuss the relationship between physiological arousal and performance, and the concept of stress inoculation.
    Enjoy!

PonderMed #16 Simon Fleming: Was NHS Nightingale a white elephant?

PonderMed #16 Simon Fleming: Was NHS Nightingale a white elephant?

This is the second of a two-parter (part 1 here) I’ve recorded with Simon Fleming (@OrthopodReg) where we take a deep dive into his work at the recently “hibernated” London Nightingale Hospital. In this one we chat about what might have been done better.
Simon is an orthopaedic registrar, #MedEd PhD, and man behind the #HammerItOut campaign (which you can listen to us discuss here).

Friedi B ,

Super interesting podcast!

Would really recommend this series for doctors, students or anyone with an interest in the medical field - great balance of chatty, thoughtful and informative.

Download this n o w

I’ve just driven for 7 hours all 7 of those hours were spent listening to back to back pondermed podcasts.

These are brilliant, I first heard of Pondermed whilst listening to the Resus Rooms Pod where Dr Lloyd gave a brief chat on his background. I find all of the topics extremely interesting, I am a Paramedic practising pre hospital medicine, and even though the pod isn’t necessarily about pre hospital medicine it is making me think about myself as a clinician and how I treat my patients, my colleagues etc .. I particularly found the “hammer out” episode interesting (need to think of a Ambulance hammer out phrase).

If you are in doubt about listening DONT BE! Tap the download button now, you will not be disappointed. This will and already has been advised to my friends and colleagues to listen.

Robbie has the potential to become a great!

Robbie has a great interviewing style; listens well, asks interesting questions, and shares his own story where necessary. Really like the series and interested to see where it goes - great insights for doctors and others.
