Amanda Holges: Making Time for Business Growth

Amanda Holges has over three decades of experience as a serial entrepreneur, having grown her family business into a highly successful international company. She is a business mentor and mastermind facilitator who passionately helps entrepreneurs with business development and growth strategies to achieve success through her membership site, virtual mentoring programmes, and group mastermind programmes. She is the host of the Time for Business Growth Podcast, where she shares strategies and advice for busy entrepreneurs on everything from productivity and time management to managing their finances and building a successful business. Amanda joins me today to share her story and journey as a business mentor, providing guidance and support to business owners. She shares some particularly useful insights on improving productivity, including her top app choices. She also explains how she faces minor problems versus how she handles major situations and shares the value of using and tweaking ideas, as well as learning how to appreciate the simple things in life. “It’s worth giving things a try and giving them a chance to work, and then say, ‘this bit works for me, this bit doesn’t.’ Then just mould it to what works for you.” Amanda Holges This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: Amanda’s journey to becoming a business mentor. Why she decided to change the way she prioritises things. How her template schedule for productivity works and how it has affected her working style. How she balances flexibility and structure in her schedule by keeping space and respecting immovable tasks. Why she is more productive in the morning. Amanda’s favourite techniques for productivity — and her top meditation app. Her recommendations for learning and improving. Why she considers it important to have ideas to try, tweak, improve, and even discard. The encouragement and “feel-good” factor — the buzz that gets you thinking that you can actually do and achieve things. How she dealt with the challenges of the last few months by shrugging off the small stuff. The “one key thing tomorrow” that she focuses on accomplishing after a day when nothing goes right. The importance of taking time to clear your mind and just face a problem the next day instead of trying to solve it right away. How she came to the realisation that she can only make memories with her loved ones when she’s actually there, present and with them — and how this influenced the way she balances work duties with family duties. How enjoying simple things can make a significant difference. Show notes provided (brilliantly, my words not theirs!) by Lidwell Writing Services, LLC This Week’s App / Resource Gett  If you are ever in London and looking for a taxi; look no further than this app. When I worked in London I was always lamenting how I never seemed to be able to find a free black cab when I needed one. I used to play netball at Blackfriars, along from our office in Cannon Street and we were often late or out of breath from lots of running when we couldn’t find that elusive taxi! With Gett it allows you to ‘summon’ a black cab and, once it’s set up, pay by card as part of the app. It has been so useful in the years that I’ve been using it.  The best example of how useful it is was when I was speaking at an event at Birmingham University with the man who headed up the London 2012 Gamesmakers and I impressed him by finding us a black cab when it was chucking it down with rain and no cabs were visible anywhere. As we were trying to think of our strategy I realised that gett works in Birmingam too so we then easily got a cab! Use this code for £3 off your first ride! Receipt Bank I’ve just been sorting out my expenses for last month and was reminded how useful this app is. Receipt Bank is a tool that allows you to scan receipts on your phone or email invoices into it and it then converts them into accounting records and sends them to one of a number of accounts systems (I use Kashflow). It’s really helped me to get on top of my accounts and expenses and stops me having a pile of random bits of paper my desk that get in the way, get me down…and get me behind on my accounts! I scan receipts at the point of purchase and throw the receipt away. If I’m really organised and charging the expense back to a client I can add them into a field to allow me to run reports based on the client’s name, which makes invoicing so much quicker. You can check it out here. The post Amanda Holges: Making Time for Business Growth first appeared on POWER to Live More.

Susan Heaton-Wright: CapsuleCRM, GarageBand, Female Entrepreneur Association and Hobbies

CapsuleCRM, GarageBand, Female Entrepreneur Association and Hobbies with Susan Heaton-Wright of Executive Voice. What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Google Calendar – Susan uses this to plan out her time and time block for tasks Entrepreneur’s Planner – we didn’t discuss which planner Sue uses (what an omission!) but I recommend the Ultimate Planner that ‘invented’ by podcast guest you haven’t heard from yet! CapsuleCRM – Susan uses this customer relationship management tool with the ‘task option’ to manage work for, and with clients. “I find it a very useful way of tracking where I am with a particular client and the relationship, how far it’s gone if that makes sense.” Tip from Jo – In CapsuleCRM you can use the ‘tracks’ functionality where you can set up a list of tasks that need to happens for something, and then you can set it to create those tasks automatically based on the date you’ve put it in or the date that something is due. “So if I’m speaking somewhere I kick off the speaking track for that particular contact and it will put in all the dates for confirming the speaking title and writing the slides and sending them to the people and all that sort of thing which I find useful. I have one for writing guest blogs as well, so if I’ve got a publishing deadline.” Asana – a project management tool (used to manage these podcasts) “I use Asana if I’m working with somebody else. we will use that together so that we track where things are going, but now I’ve got this idea of tracker within Capsule. I think that I might change.” GarageBand – a music creation studio on a Mac. “I love GarageBand. I’m a Mac fan and I love my GarageBand. In fact for proposals to clients I now do a little mini podcast for them just to say, “I’d love to work with you. Having chatted on the phone about this I think X, Y, and Z would be perfect for you for training.” it just gives a little bit of a personalised touch to the proposal, and because it’s about speaking it marries perfectly with showing what I do. “ Other Resources Female Entrepreneur Association – “I love learning. I love finding out more about things. I think that you probably are the same. Always interested in new things, getting more knowledge. I’m a member of the Female Entrepreneur Association. Carrie Green. I don’t know if you’ve come across her. She’s absolutely wonderful, and she’s got a membership group that part of it is on Facebook, but every month you get what’s called a bundle, and there will be a topic that they focus on and this month it is about creating a membership club which isn’t of particular interest to me, but a previous month was on webinars and another month was on creating systems for your business.” The Times – newspaper “I read The Times every morning online and there are usually some good articles in that too.” Books Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found by Cheryl Strayed – “There was an article about her this week in The Times anyway, but she wrote the book about the walk that she went on. There was a film made of it earlier this year. Very inspirational.” Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Someone Who’s Been There by Cheryl Strayed – “She also did a book that is the answers to questions, sort of agony aunt questions. For a long time she was anonymous, and the way that she answered things was so beautiful because she had real empathy with people that were going through a really hard time, really struggling with some very, very difficult life challenges, and it’s particularly poignant because she’s had a lot of major challenges herself in her life, and yet she was able to share and make people feel better.” A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – “I listen to the Christmas Carol, you know an audio version of that while I’m making Christmas cakes and things like that.” Music April Verch – a folk fiddle player “she collects different sorts of music which is brilliant and talked about the fiddle and everything. She plays the fiddle and dances at the same time which is awesome and didn’t fall over which I would have done. She also sings, but she doesn’t sing and play the fiddle at the same time!” Films & Theatre Farinelli and the King by Claire van Kampen– “We’d wanted to go and see it and there were no tickets, and we kept going into the theatre, no tickets. These two turned up at 9:00 in the morning so we bought them. Went there and it was the most fantastic play with music. There were live musicians there. It was beautiful.” Tips Early morning walk – “I get up with my son because he leaves for school at 7:20, so I’m up and around then. What I’ve started to do in the last three months is go for a walk just to get some energy up, and I will do anything from a two thousand step walk to perhaps a half hour walk which gives me about six thousand steps on my fit watch, which is good.” Drinking water – “I also have a five hundred millilitre bottle of tap water as soon as I get up because I’m always dehydrated after sleeping.” Time Blocking – “There are times when I do time block. I’ve found that if there’s a proposal I need to do for a client or I’m writing a blog or doing my podcast, or even I’ve been creating some online courses, I will switch my phone to my call minder, switch all of my mobile phones and other devices off and just focus for an hour or so and I need to do that. I’ve even got a timer that if I want to do that for a half an hour then I’ll put that timer on and it will ring after thirty minutes, and I know I’ve focused completely on that task which sounds a little bit strict but it works for me.” Prioritising Clients – “He (a speaker at a conference) said that he always answers the phone which is a bit scary when you’re in a conference with him, but we’ll move over from that, but he will always take a call and he will always respond, and if somebody says that they want a quote from something, he will drop everything to make sure that quote goes straightaway. If they email him, he’ll pick up the phone and speak to them, and he says that that is a game changer because people think, “Oh, gosh. This person is really interested in having my work.” Rather procrastinating and thinking, “Oh, well they’re probably at lunch now. Oh, it’s a bit late to phone up. I’ll phone up tomorrow.” By which time he has engaged with the client, and is further on in the process, so I think that was a really, really good message to me and other entrepreneurs that actually the client, and actually getting that work, is the priority.” Exercise – “I do exercise. I go to the gym three or four times a week in the winter. In the summer I go swimming in a local lido because I love swimming outdoors and go walking, and I go body boarding when I’m down in Wales at our house down there. Have Hobbies – “I do lots of sewing and crafty things and cooking. I love reading. I love going to the cinema and the theatre, all things like that, so lots of things.” Learning from Challenges -“When you’re an entrepreneur there are challenges, there are things, and you think that you’ve hit a brick wall, or you have got a very difficult client. I had a very difficult situation that was resolved last week. I will say it was two hours before we presented a windup order to the high courts and finally we were paid. That took a lot of strength. I felt that I grew as a person for it because it would have been very easy to just back down from this bully, and we were completely in the right. That’s clearly a strategy that this particular company has to avoid paying which is unacceptable.” Getting Past Challenges – “There are occasions when I have just switched everything off and I’ve gone for a swim, or gone for a walk, gone to make a cup of coffee. There’s nothing wrong with that.” To Contact Susan LinkedIn “My full name is Susan Heaton-Wright and you can find me on LinkedIn.” SuperstarCommunicator.com The post Susan Heaton-Wright: CapsuleCRM, GarageBand, Female Entrepreneur Association and Hobbies first appeared on POWER to Live More.

Mohammed ElKhamissy: The Power of Living with Intention

In 2001, Mohammed Elkhamissy found himself a new graduate in the wake of 9/11 and unable to get a job. He had grown up playing soccer competitively and had initially thought he would go on to play professionally. When that didn’t come to fruition and he found himself unemployable as a Middle Eastern American in a post-9/11 world, he began reaching out to connections. He wound up working for a construction company and discovered that he had an affinity for the business. He now lives in Qatar and runs one of the top construction companies in the region.  Though Mohammad had achieved a lot of material success, when he discovered that his young daughter had been diagnosed with cancer, everything he had prioritised to that point vanished. He found that it didn’t matter how great his car was or how successful he was. Through his study of Stoicism, he discovered that living positively is a choice and that when you live authentically, you can give back immensely. In the wake of his daughter’s illness, Mohammad has taken his commitment to giving back to new levels. He is an angel investor and is setting up a female entrepreneurship fund that will debut next year. Today Mohammad and I discuss the power of connections and how they can feed your personal journey. He touches on the importance of prioritising what makes you happy and why choosing optimism can impact the world around you. He shares his routines and tools for staying focused, how his life changed with his daughter’s illness, and why being “average” is an asset. We also discusses the importance of choosing to live with intention and how it can fuel success. “Setbacks are always going to be there… but when they hit, it’s how you treat them. You don’t quit.” Mohammed Elkhamissy This week on The Power to Live More Podcast: Why Mohammed approaches his life with the principles of a professional athleteHow to design your life to be freeThe principles that Mohammed lives by that motivate and fuel his successThe power of choosing to live your life with intentionHow choosing optimism or pessimism allows you to give back in new waysHow seeing himself as average helped him break out of his preconceived notions about successMohammed’s tools for when things don’t go according to planWhy you should always be learning and why it’s vital to translate what you learn into actionWhy you should do what really makes you happyHow Mohammed organises his day for personal success Resources Mentioned: Evernote GTasks Oura Ring SpotifyWhoop   Connect with Mohammed ElKhamissy: Mohammed Elkhamissy Website Mohammed Elkhamissy on LinkedIn Mohammed Elkhamissy on Instagram  Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Laura McClellan: Productively Build A Life That Matters

Laura McClellan is a lawyer, writer, productivity enthusiast, and tech geek who is passionate about encouraging women in their individual journeys as people, wives, mothers, and citizens. Laura hosts The Productive Woman podcast, a weekly show about productivity for busy women that helps the listener find the tools and encouragement they need to manage their time, life, and stress so they can accomplish the things they care about and create a meaningful life. Laura also facilitates mastermind groups and offers productivity coaching for women who are seeking support, encouragement, and accountability in identifying and pursuing their goals. Laura joins me today to reveal how her interest in increasing productivity started at an early age, why she has always considered herself as a little bit of a ‘productivity nerd’ since she was very young, and how that interest developed into creating time management and organisation strategies as her life got busier. She discusses the obligations on most women to do many things well and why it’s vital to learn ways to manage not just your time, but your energy and your attention so you can do the things that really matter to you. Laura also shares the reason she started The Productive Woman podcast and why she loves being able to connect with women all over the world who all have a common goal. “A lot of times we feel like whatever we’re doing, we’re not quite doing it right, and that everybody else has it figured out and we are the only ones that are struggling, but if we put our heads together, we can share ideas, and every one of us will have a better opportunity to make the kind of life we want.” Laura McClellan This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: How she honed her productivity skillWhy you should set priorities for yourselfHow she created a life that matters to herWhere her podcast topics come fromWhy she loves the honesty and supportive atmosphere of her groupWhy awareness and intentionality are critical to productivityThe importance of having a goalHow she integrates her family life and her professional goalsTools and apps that Laura uses to stay productiveWhat a great day looks like for LauraWhy she always looks for something to be grateful for, especially in these challenging times Resources Mentioned: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons for Personal Change book by Steven R. Wendy Kier: The Trauma Recovery Method

Wendy Kier is a former Business Coach, Author, and creator of The Trauma Recovery Method (TRM). Following a successful career coaching female entrepreneurs, coaches and consultants, Wendy wanted to help others differently. While working on her recovery from a traumatic early life in the UK care system, she created the Trauma Recovery Method. Wendy works with people to break the trauma cycle and create a more loving and compassionate relationship with themselves and others. Today, Wendy shares why she chose to transition from business coaching to helping women overcome trauma. She reveals how she handles reliving her trauma while writing her book and how that inspired her to create The Trauma Recovery Method. Wendy highlights the importance of self-coaching when healing from traumatic experiences and how journalling is also part of the recovery method. She reveals how past trauma can manifest in our lives and why she has become more conscious of her health. Wendy also shares the routines and rituals that help her each day and how she structures her time to get everything done. “The brain is very clever. It will try its hardest to keep you safe, and actually all it’s doing is locking you in the past.” Wendy Kier This Week on The Power to Live More Podcast: Why Wendy chose to start her Women Trauma Recovery practiceHow Wendy deals with reliving her trauma as part of writing her bookHow Wendy developed the Trauma Recovery Method programmeWhy self-coaching is an essential element of the programmeHow journalling plays a vital role in this methodologyHow trauma from the past manifests in daily lifeThe process Wendy is using to write her bookHow Wendy structures her time to ensure everything gets doneWhy Wendy has become more conscious about her healthWendy’s routines and ritualsWhat Wendy does when the day doesn’t go as planned Resources Mentioned: Google Docs Connect with Wendy Kier: Conscious Coaching and MentoringWendy Kier on LinkedInBook: Be More WolfWendy Kier on Twitter Join the POWER to Live More CALM Membership Attention home-based coaches and consultants! Evernote, Purple Cow, Dream It Alive, Business Connectedness with Hela Wozniak-Kay of Sister Snog Listen Below and Here’s What We Recommended: Tools & Apps Evernote – “I’m a Virgo who loves lists. My essential tool of life which includes work, and play, and organising everything else, is Evernote. I’m not quite sure how I possibly existed before Evernote came on the scene. I’m a massive fan of Evernote. You’ve got to get into it, and buy into it. It’s kind of like a sort of effortless solution, and you can share what you’re doing with those that are also on Evernote. I think it’s like a killer app that is just gorgeous, and whatever you want, music, videos, photos. It’s kind of like a sort of seamless snapshot of stored ideas, and information.” Note from Jo – I’m an Evernote Certified Consultant and use those skills to help my members in POWER to Live More CALM Note from Jo – Steve Dotto has a series of videos about using Evernote. Note from Jo – I’ve started using it to scan in stuff that I’ve previously kept, like orders of service at weddings or cards that people have sent me and things like that. I just scan them in and then chuck them away, so that I don’t have a load of old bits of paper in the house. Dream It Alive – “It’s a place where you can create your own vision boards and dream boards. We all need to dream and we all need to have goals. It’s about writing them down, but you need to turn them into pictures so you can see them. It helps you visualise.” Pocket – “The other one is Pocket, because yes, you’ll see something, and where do you put … if you just kind of store it in a place that gets lost, you won’t go back to it, but you can build up your Pocket to be those things that you can have a look at.” Scoop-It – “I do also like, for those that don’t have time to blog, but have an area that’s their subject, whatever it might be, Scoop. It, so you can create your own sort of Scoop and write your own comments on X, Y or Z.” Rebel Mouse – “This aggregates all your tweets and pins, and it has a snapshot of your social output. You can see what you’re doing, and you get a feeling for who you are and what you’re putting out there. If you don’t like what you see, change it.” Alpabetizer – “The last one is called the Alphabetizer. If you have a list of things, twenty things, and you’ve got to put them in alphabetical order, then use the alphabetizer, because it’ll do it for you. Well, there you go. I know, that’s totally useless, but someone might need it one day! Other Resources Medium Daily Digest – “I really like Medium Daily Digest. Today’s Medium Daily Digest, it had these … It’s kind of eclectic things, because they always set me off. Today’s articles that I liked, one was, “Elevate Yourself with Side Projects,” which I think is a very good thing, because if you’re only doing one thing, and you’re consumed by it … I’ve always got at least six other plates spinning that I’m doing, so it’s not just Sister Snog, or family, or friends. I’ve always got other things that are on the go. I think it’s important, because otherwise, you just become one-dimensional. The other article, it was called, “Collecting Experiences.” How to stay productive even when interrupted, which I thought was very relevant to today. The other one, “Does a ‘Fake It ‘Til You Make It’ Attitude Towards Business Work? Yes.” If you want to be someone, even if you’re not it, behave as if you are, and you will become it.” Books One of my favourite books is Purple Cow by Seth Godin. Music Disco – “I’m just inspired by all disco music. That’s what I always have on in the background if I’m getting myself into a good frame of mind. That’s me personally, being a disco queen.” Films Overcoming Struggle – “I’m quite often inspired by films that have a certain amount of overcoming struggle, that people have got through something, they face something, because running your own business, being an entrepreneur, you do have to sometimes find something in yourself on the days where perhaps, everything isn’t quite rosy and peachy.” Watching Films to Relax – “I also am definitely a Netflix addict. I might have it on in the background. I do like things that are series, Netflix original, House of Cards, Since Orphan Black, Once Upon A Time. I really like anything that’s got a story that continues. In fact, Once Upon a Time did inspire Once Upon a Dinner Time. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but it’s all about fairy tales. It’s just fantastic and seems to be going on forever.” Tips Business Connectedness – “you need to be connected in business, because everybody is connected to each other, and that’s how you’ll get the doors open. They feed me, I feed them, and then quite often we come up with something that is because of both of us. That is my work, so how brilliant is that?” Planning – The beginning of the week, Monday, I see as a planning day, and a desk day where I generally will not go into London. Mondays are when I will catch up, will make phone calls, will send emails, will plan, maybe it’s just something I’ve got to write, who I’m going to see.” Magical Connections – “It’s amazing what happens when two people sit down and just talk about whatever is going on in their business.” Being Focused on the Important Stuff – “I’m never too busy, I’m always doing lots of things” Cooking to Relax – “Cooking is something that I do. Morning Gratitude Routine – “I do have a little bit of reflection before I switch the motor on. I’ve kind of got into morning gratitude, so I will, in Evernote, in my notebook that’s called “Gratitudes,” write something that I’m quite thankful for, on a daily basis. I think you can get caught up in other stuff. Seven is the kind of magic number at Sister Snog, so I always write seven gratitudes, nearly always, most days.” Using a Personal Trainer – “Goodness, me. It’s brilliant. She really is brilliant. It is early days. I haven’t transformed yet. She’s really good because she looks at … It’s not about doing some crazy boot camp training thing, because I don’t wish to be tortured. She’s also helping me … What I love about her is we can train anywhere. I’m kind of helping her understand her business, as well. One of the things is, how to turn your home into a gym. I have exercises now to do on the steps, to do on a chair, even things to pick up around the house. That’s what we’re going to do, and we will do, in due course, some videos of “Turn Your House Into a Gym.” Now there’s no excuses for not doing 20 minutes, and then having a break and doing another 20 minutes.” Swimming for Exercise – “I was swimming when I was in Greenwich, two or three times a week. An early morning swim, I always wanted to be the first in the pool. That was my kind of … I just want to be first in the pool. I never was, but I still have that. It makes you sort of get up and go.” Motivational Quote – “I always know you can’t have a rainbow without some rain.” Life Experience Helps – “Nothing’s ever that bad. It just isn’t. It might feel it for a moment, but I think the longer you’re around, you realise you’ve been there before. You got through it. This happened and sometimes, instead of a bus, a limo comes along.” To Contact Hela If you Google Hela Wozniak-Kay, you could find me, or on our website. Our numbers are there.
