In this episode of the National Rural Education Association Podcast, the Rural Voice, we interview our cohost Dr. Jared Bigham regarding his personal experience with becoming infected with COVID-19. In this episode recorded in October of 2020, we discuss rural education given COVID. We discuss some of the challenges of reporting infection rates in small classrooms and school districts. We also suggest careful dissemination of information to ensure no one student, teacher, or administrator is outed regarding their infection. We discuss the challenges of stigma with the virus and some methods for reporting information useful without identifying individual people. Jared shares his experience of becoming infected with COVID-19 and the challenges the infection created for his wife and family given public perception and misunderstandings regarding what it means to be infected, assumed risk, the health outcomes, and, ultimately, social implications of being infected in a small community.
