    Animation One-To-Ones 29 - Pablo Berger

    Animation One-To-Ones 29 - Pablo Berger

Skwigly.com presents Animation One-To-Ones featuring Ryan Gaur in conversation with Pablo Berger, director of the animated feature 'Robot Dreams'.

Having premiered at Cannes followed by a warmly-received run of festival screenings across the world (picking up an Annecy cristal, Goya Award, Annie Award and a Best Animated Feature nomination at this year’s Academy Awards), 'Robot Dreams' is based on the graphic novel by Sarah Varon. Taking place in 1980s New York, the film tells the story of Dog, a lonely dog who purchases and assembles Robot, a happy-go-lucky robot, for companionship. After establishing a firm friendship and forming a uniquely heartwarming bond, the pair visit Coney Island and become separated on the beach. Thus Dog embarks on a mission to save their friendship and get Robot back.

Previously known for live-action Spanish films including 'Torremolinos 73', 'Blancanieves' and 'Abracadabra', 'Robot Dreams' marks Pablo Berger’s first feature-length foray into 2D animation, having been moved by the original graphic novel some years previously.

Presently enjoying a UK theatrical release via distributor Curzon, ahead of a special screening at this year’s Cardiff Animation Festival on April 28th Skwigly were delighted to get some time with Pablo to learn more about the project.

    Animation One-To-Ones 28 - Bret Parker & Pete Barma

    Animation One-To-Ones 28 - Bret Parker & Pete Barma

Skwigly.com presents Animation One-To-Ones featuring Mel Cionco in conversation with Bret Parker and Pete Barma, discussing their Oscar-shortlisted animated short film 'Pete'.

With over 25 years of experience at Pixar Animation Studios, Bret has animated on such animated feature film classics as 'Finding Nemo', 'The Incredibles' and 'Ratatouille', moving on to Animation Tools Lead on projects including 'Brave', 'Monsters University' and 'Inside Out'. Following her recent feature length documentary 'Through The Windows', Bret more recently directed the animated short Pete which has screened at such prestigious events as Tribeca and Annecy, and is based on the mid-70s gender identity journey - via Little League Baseball - of partner Pete Barma, co-writer and exec producer of the film. A simultaneously personal yet crucially relatable story of being true to oneself, and the tremendous value of familial and outside support, Pete was produced through the pair’s own Artfarm Productions, "an artist collaborative dedicated to bringing diverse stories from underepresented voices to light".

Interesting Interviews and Charming Conversations

2015 Update: I attended my first Skwigly live event which screened films, had a Q&A with Ainslie Henderson and also had beer and snacks available too, great to network with many like minded people and make new friends.

The podcast's have gone from strength to strength with even more brilliant interviews with directors of blockbuster animated feature films now (alongside your favourite indie short creators) and behind the scenes and upcoming production discussions.

Interviewees are always more open and insightful on this podcast than other interviews because the people interviewing know the subjects and ask great questions about the productions and process (rather than just advertising pr)

I've left my original review below for further recommendation.

Great podcast for animators and those interested in animation. T Some really great interviews with people from the animation industry and the occasional competition too. Discussions don't go over people's heads with technicalities and the hosts are humourous and passionate. The podcast is well structured and divided also, so if a particular subject matter isn't quite your thing then you can simply skip to the next section and not be lost in subject, not that you'll find yourself doing this mind.

Would reccommend mostly to animation students and graduates, but no reason seasoned animators shouldn't tune in too.

Fantastic podcast for animators and enthusiasts

A really great podcast by two well informed and passionate presenters. Featuring lots of in-depth interviews with animators, directors, producers, writers and just about anyone else they can get their grubby fanboy hands on!

It does a really great job of being filled with useful information and facts, but also chatty and informal so you feel like it's a discussion between two friends who happen to be massive animation nerds in a coffee shop

Recommended for anyone with more than a passing interest in animation history, careers, people, technology or gossip
