Pratik Athavale would refuse to go to bed as a kid because he always wanted to play a game of cricket with his father before sleeping. One day a game of Gully cricket resulted in a few broken window panes and his father sent him to a cricket ground. That’s how his cricketing journey started. He played for Nashik District Cricket Association in invitation matches of Maharashtra Cricket Association. He represented Pune University at university level and even went to Mumbai to play in Kanga League. However, when he realised that opportunities won’t come his way in Indian cricket, he took the opportunity that came his way.  He took a job in Oman and started playing cricket in that Gulf country. His performances meant that he was selected for the national team as soon as he became eligible to play. Pratik repaid the faith shown by Oman and helped them secure a ticket to the T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA. Oman are in the same group as the defending champions England and Australia and that still feels like a dream for Pratik. However, he is determined that Oman isn’t there just to make up the numbers. प्रतीक आठवलेने घराबाहेर क्रिकेट खेळताना शेजाऱ्यांची काच फोडली आणि त्याची वर्णी मैदानावर लागली. तिथून त्याचा क्रिकेटचा प्रवास त्याने सुरु केला आणि लवकरच तो नाशिक जिल्ह्यासाठी खेळत होता. मुंबईत कांगा लीगमध्ये प्रतिकने त्याचं नशीब अजमावून बघितलं, पुणे विद्यापीठाकडूनदेखील तो खेळला. पण हवी तशी संधी मिळाली नाही म्हणून त्याने २०२० मध्ये ओमानला जाण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. तिथे नोकरी बरोबरच क्रिकेट देखील खेळता येणार होतं आणि त्याने त्या संधीचं पूर्ण सोनं केलं. ओमानमध्ये देशांतर्गत स्पर्धेत चमकदार कामगिरी केली आणि २०२३ मध्ये जेव्हा तो ओमानसाठी क्रिकेट खेळण्यास पात्र ठरला तेव्हा ओमानला थेट वेस्ट इंडिज आणि अमेरिकेत होणाऱ्या विश्वचषकाचं तिकिट काढून दिलं... ओमानच्या गटात गतविजेते इंग्लंड आणि ऑस्ट्रेलिया हे मातब्बर संघ आहेत त्यामुळे प्रतिकचा विश्वचषक नक्कीच स्वप्नवत असणार आहे. पण त्याला तेवढीच ईच्छा आहे कि वडिलांचे आवडते सर विव्ह रिचर्ड्स ह्यांना पण भेटावं... प्रतीकचा हा प्रवास कट्ट्यावरच्या गप्पांमध्ये उलगडला आहे द हिंदूचा क्रीडा पत्रकार अमोल कऱ्हाडकरने...

Saurabh Netravalkar’s story is uniquely ‘typical’. Like every other Mumbai cricketer, he had to juggle between cricket, education & Mumbai locals. Saurabh progressed through age-group cricket and represented India at the 2010 U-19 World Cup alongside KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Jaydev Unadkat to name a few. At the same time, he completed his engineering but rejected a job offer to focus on his cricketing dream. However, the fierce competition meant that he never cemented his place in the side. At that point, he decided to turn back on cricket and moved to the USA for higher education. Even today his bread and butter is his job in a MNC as a software developer. But what has changed? He went back to cricket after moving to the States. Today, he is part of the USA squad for the T20 World Cup and will likely play against India on June 12. सौरभ नेत्रावळकरची गोष्ट जेवढी typical आहे तेवढीच वेगळी पण आहे. मुंबईच्या मैदानांवर क्रिकेट खेळायला सुरुवात केली, शाळा- कॉलेज आणि अर्थात लोकलचा प्रवास सांभाळत आपल्या डावखुऱ्या वेगवान गोलंदाजीची त्याने छाप पाडली. भारतासाठी के. एल. राहुल, मयांक अगरवाल,जयदेव उनाडकट सोबत १९-वर्षांखालील विश्वचषक देखील खेळला. क्रिकेट खेळायचं म्हणून इंजिनियरिंग पूर्ण झाल्यावर मिळालेली नोकरी स्वीकारली नाही, पण मुंबई क्रिकेट संघात जागा नाही म्हणून पुन्हा शिक्षणाकडे वळला. सौरभ उच्चशिक्षणासाठी अमेरिकेत आला आणि आजही त्याचं पोटा-पाण्याचं साधन त्याची सॉफ्टवेअर डेव्हलपरची नोकरी आहे. मग ह्यात वेगळं काय आहे? अमेरिकेत गेल्यावर सौरभ पुन्हा क्रिकेटकडे वळला आणि आज तो २०२४ मध्ये होणाऱ्या T२० विश्वचषकासाठी अमेरिकेच्या संघात आहे. १२ जूनला तो भारताविरुद्ध खेळेल अशी दाट शक्यता आहे. त्याचा हा प्रवास सौरभ द हिंदूचा क्रीडा पत्रकार अमोल कऱ्हाडकरला सांगतोय कट्ट्यावरच्या गप्पांमध्ये..
