The selection committee meeting for Team India’s World Cup squad is always up for a huge debate. The deadline to submit the preliminary squad is May 1 and the team news could be out anytime soon. Only a handful of players are certain of their berth in the World Cup squad, but there could be some jostling for remaining positions. Against that backdrop, Sports Katta organised a selection committee meeting convened and chaired by Team Sports Katta member Amol Gokhale. Members of the selection committee are - Aditya Joshi, team Sports Katta; Amol Karhadkar, Sports Journalist, The Hindu and Shardul Kadam, Amuk Tamuk Podcast Network.

Sanjay Dhas knew that if he were blessed with a baby boy, he would name him after legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar. He did name his son - Sachin. He probably had foreseen that Sachin Dhas would become a cricketer as well. Sachin remembers playing with only bat and ball, nothing else. He started playing cricket at four and played his first invitation match at six. Coming from a small village like Beed, he rose through the ranks of age-group cricket in Maharashtra. With his unmistakable talent, he was named in the India squad for the U-19 World Cup. India lost the World Cup final to Australia but Sachin was one of the standout performers of the tournament. April 18, 2008. The first match of the IPL was played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. IPL is into its 17th season and has seen numerous players turn up for different franchises. Some players turned out to be only one-season wonders. The likes of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, who played in the inaugural IPL season, are still active. The talent IPL has seen is enormous. It has honed some of the superstars of world cricket. In this IPL special series ‘IPLchi Ratne Pt 1’, we look at three stellar players who made their name in the IPL. All three players hail from Gujarat. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were scouted and signed by Mumbai Indians and they’re integral to Mumbai’s success. Axar Patel was with Mumbai in 2013, but his breakthrough season was in 2014 with Punjab Kings. The first episode of the series is presented by freelance journalist Rujuta Luktuke and the Hindu’s sports journalist Amol Karhadkar…

As the IPL approaches midway mark, the debate for the who goes to the World Cup is gaining traction. Every week some new name in thrown into the mix. But what goes behind the selection process? Darshan Nalkande started playing cricket in his home town, Akola, at a young age. At 13, he was selected into Vidarbha Cricket Association’s residential academy, Nagpur. To pursue his cricketing dream, he moved to Nagpur. Throughout his formative years, his parents backed his dream and today Darshan has ensured that his parents’ hardships were not in vain. At 25, he is an integral part of the Vidarbha cricket team in all three forms of the game. Darshan was part of the Punjab Kings set-up for three years but did not get a game. In 2022, he moved to Gujarat Titans and made his IPL debut against his former side. His maiden IPL wicket - his Vidarbha teammate Jitesh Sharma. In IPL 2023 Qualifier 1, he got the wicket of  Ruturaj Gaikwad but he had bowled a no-ball. How did a coach like Ashish Nehra help him move on from that mistake and focus on the game ahead?  What has changed in the Gujarat Titans’ camp under the captaincy of Shubman Gill?
