Behind the Scenes Minis: Murder and Benin

Holly and Tracy talk about the ire that comes about when examining the press coverage of the Goolds when they were murder suspects. They then discuss the artwork plundered from Benin in 1897, and how that comes with its own biases when looking at contemporary accounts.

The Punitive Expedition of 1897 and the Benin Bronzes

Many cultural objects and works of art were taken from the Kingdom of Benin in western Africa in 1897, in what is typically described as a punitive raid or a punitive expedition by the British. In the last few years, some nations and institutions have committed to returning these pieces, but only a few have actually been returned at this point.

not target audience ,

Niche American history

Interesting niche history subjects but a horrible presentation. Please edit out neurotic laughing of one of the presenters!! Terrible tic at places that are not amusing (e.g. “tear gas causes serious injuries” [15s laughter], “her mother and grandmother died in the same year” [15s laughter] and etc). Awful

:D

Really good podcast! I always learn something new, even when it’s on a topic I had some pre-existing familiarity with, there’s usually something in the mix I hadn’t heard before. There are also so many topics I’d never had any idea about before there is an episode on it - they really do find some incredible stories most of us would never otherwise get to hear about!

They do both have somewhat nasal voices, but it feels like people who are complaining about it are really just being kind of mean-spirited; by the time you’re a few minutes into an episode you’re used to it, just the same as with anyone’s voice.

Keep it up ladies! :o)
