Bonus 66.5: Let's talk about sleep (and what's new and fun with Marnie & Stephanie)

Welcome to this bonus episode with Marnie and Stephanie where we share a few updates on our personal lives and then dive into the popular topic of sleep.  Here is what we share in today's episode:
We discuss how we've been "hanging out" on Clubhouse, which is the invitation-only audio-chat social networking app.  Follow each of us: @superfoodsteph and @myzenfullife so that you can join our weekly rooms where we discuss a variety of topics. We'd love to connect with our listeners and learn more about what's on your mind.  Need an invite?  Message us to get on the list. A few of the sleep tips we share include: Making your room an inviting, cool and dark place. Stop eating a couple hours before bed (and limiting liquids too so you don't wake up to use the loo). Journal/brain dump your to do list before bed. Meditate/breath-very helpful if you do wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep. Gratitude practice

We also talk about the role cortisol and stress play with your ability to get a good night's sleep and how a simple functional medicine at-home lab test can provide data to help you get to the root cause of your sleep concerns.  Reach out to Stephanie & Marnie  to learn more about at-home lab tests. E65: How to build a strong immune system and other great tips with nutritionist and biochemist Karen Hurd

E65: How to build a strong immune system and other great tips with nutritionist and biochemist Karen Hurd

We are thrilled to welcome back, Karen Hurd, Nutritionist and Biochemist. She has been practicing nutrition for 30 years and has helped over 30K people reclaim their health through her services, including her e-courses. The first time we talked with Karen was in the spring of 2020, where we introduced her and she shared her life and very personal story about what led her to do this work.  She talked about her nutrition philosophy and how to heal the body through the power of food. We highly recommend that you listen to episode #39 with Karen as it was our most popular episode so far.  She is full of so much wisdom and insight, and we love how Karen is so deep into the science, in particular with Covid-19, which she’ll share with us today.
Karen, in addition to her nutritional training, holds her masters degree in biochemistry. Her philosophy in approaching health is that of Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) when he said, "Let food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be food." Karen applies her knowledge at the biomolecular level to understand the cause of the health problems we face and what dietary and lifestyle changes are needed to correct that cause and unlock our best health.
In today's episode Karen shares her immunity building tips including an in depth discussion about the Covid-19 virus.  We discuss her immunity building protocol, which includes food (and yes we’ll discuss sugar) but also simple lifestyle tips to help ward off any viruses, or reduce the symptoms if you do contract one.   We even talk about her view on doing a polar plunge and what temperature she recommends that you keep your room at night.
Karen’s goal is to live to 120 years old and she does everything in her power each day to help her live as long as she possibly can, which she shares with us in our conversation.
Karen also shares her perspective on the Covid-19 vaccine, which we know is top of mind right now, as we enter the second year of this pandemic.
Karen has an exciting update as she is in the process of creating a free app to provide people with the health studies relating to Covid-19, the pandemic, the vaccine and other news to help reduce the fear that many people are experiencing. We talk about the role that stress and fear play on your health, which we know is at an all time high.
This episode is for informational purposes only and should not be taken as medical advice.  Should you need information on the Covid-19 virus please visit the CDC website for guidance. Please seek professional guidance from your medical/health care provider.
If you want to learn about Karen's upcoming app you can watch her video here and check out her GoFundMe page

E63: Inspiration to redefine travel and make it part of your everyday lifestyle and budget with Lindsey Ranzau

E63: Inspiration to redefine travel and make it part of your everyday lifestyle and budget with Lindsey Ranzau

We are thrilled to bring you today’s guest, Lindsey Ranzau, aka "Look about Lindsey" on social media.
Lindsey Ranzau is a Minnesota-based travel writer who spends her free time exploring the hidden gems of Minnesota and beyond with her husband, Cole. Her mission is to change the definition of travel from long, expensive, far-away trips to more attainable getaways that can be part of your everyday lifestyle and budget.
She shares her journey and how she started exploring travel and blogging and sharing it with the world.  We talk about travel and adventure and how it allows you to get exposed to different ways of life, yet at the end of the day we realize that people are way more similar than different.  She shares her favorite spots in MN/Midwest and around the world.  Lindsey talk about her tips to finding those local hidden gems in any town she visits including restaurants, hikes, activities, bed and breakfasts and more.
The insights and motivation that she shares go beyond travel and can be applied to everyday life.  She offers a lot of profound advice including how we shouldn't apologize for putting ourselves first, no different than how we're told on airlines to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others.
For those of you who live in colder climates, Lindsey will inspire you to get outside in the cold and snow and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Check out her blog post about activities to do in MN this winter.
