BW Pod #22! Gavin Gwynne previews Welsh derby with Joe Cordina, training in LA and sacrifices

BW Pod #22! Gavin Gwynne previews Welsh derby with Joe Cordina, training in LA and sacrifices

In this episode, we catch up with Welsh lightweight champion Gavin Gwynne (11-0, 1KO) ahead of next Saturday night’s huge fight at London’s O2 Arena, live on Sky Box Office.

'GG' is less than one week away from challenging Cardiff’s Joe Cordina (9-0, 7KO), the 2016 Olympian who holds the British and Commonwealth lightweight belts and we talk about all angles of the all-Welsh derby.

Gavin has just returned from a two-week stint of training in Los Angeles. Although going with gym mates Lee Selby and Jordan Withers, it was a completely new experience for the 29-year-old, who has also made the immense sacrifice of being a full time fighter for the first time ever.

BW Pod #21! Champion Chris Jenkins reflects on Paddy Gallagher win and next defence vs Liam Taylor

For so long the unluckiest person in Welsh boxing, Swansea's welterweight belt collector Chris Jenkins (22-3-2, 8KO) joins the podcast fresh from his latest win. The 30-year-old reflects on his successful defence of the British title, when he also captured the vacant Commonwealth championship with a ninth round technical unanimous decision against homeowner Paddy Gallagher (16-6, 10KO). Jenkins responds to some of the criticism from partisan critics and discusses his next move, which is likely to be mandatory challenger Liam Taylor (21-1, 10KO) before the end of the year.

BW Pod #19! MTK Global mini-series: Eurostar Jay Harris & Gary Lockett embrace new Welsh boxing era

BW Pod #19! MTK Global mini-series: Eurostar Jay Harris & Gary Lockett embrace new Welsh boxing era

Croseo, welcome to another BoxingWales podcast. Our daily podcast mini-series continues the count down to a big night of fights in the capital as MTK Global stage another show in Cardiff on Saturday 1 June.

The two main title fights at the Vale Sports Arena both have a European feel to them. Blackwood’s Craig Evans (19-2-2, 3KO) takes on Ireland’s rough and tough Stephen Ormond (27-5, 13KO), a rematch of their bruising encounter in 2017. Evans prevailed in that one, taking a Unanimous Decision in Belfast. The Welshman’s WBO European title is on the line, it may not be a prestigious belt but the way our sport is, it does mean a world ranking is up for grabs.

In the headliner, Swansea’s Commonwealth Jay Harris (15-0, 8KO), son of former Welsh and British champion Peter Harris, aims to add another strap to the family collection. The flyweight can win the vacant EBU European title against Angel Moreno (19-3-2, 6KO) and really make a statement as a flag bearer for Welsh boxing in what’s hopefully a new chapter.

In this episode, we speak to Jay and his manager Gary Lockett to preview the crunch clash with Moreno. We also touch on the importance of the promotional backing Jay has secured and what that means for Welsh boxing as a whole.

Thank you very much for listening. If you’ve enjoyed, please leave us a review on iTunes or SoundCloud this really helps us grow the podcast audience. For the same reason, please recommend us to fight fans and feel free to send us some feedback on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, too.

We’ll be back tomorrow to speak to Lee Eaton, promoter of the show and the perfect person to cap our podcast countdown to MTK Global’s show in Cardiff on Saturday, live on iFL TV and ESPN in the United States.

BW Pod #18! MTK Global mini-series: Calmness is key for prospect Rhys Edwards and coach Gary Lockett

Our daily podcast mini-series continues to countdown to MTK Global’s show at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff on Saturday 1 June.

Aside from a tripleheader of quality title fights, there’s also a promising supporting cast, featuring some of Welsh boxing’s next generation of prizefighters, including prospects like Lance Cooksey (9-0, 2KO), Jacob Robinson (5-0, 2KO) and Maredudd Thomas (7-0, 2KO).

One standout from the crop of prospects is Tonypandy’s Rhys Edwards (5-0, 2KO), who has hit the ground running since turning professional seven months ago and he’s looked like a million dollars in doing so.

In this episode, the 19-year-old featherweight and his coach Gary Lockett talk about keeping his feet on the ground amidst growing hype and they reveal the team spirit radiating from their gym in East Cardiff.

BW Pod #17! MTK Global mini-series: Sean McGoldrick hails 'statement show' and key night in Cardiff

Welcome back to the BoxingWales podcast for the second in our daily mini-series as we build up to MTK Global’s show at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff Bay on Saturday 1 June.

In this episode, we get to catch up with Newport’s Sean McGoldrick (8-0, 2KO). Since ending his time with Team GB, the standout amateur has made steady progress as a professional, amassing an 8-0 record and gaining a lot of experience around the country.

McGoldrick fought in his home country for the first time in August but has only fought once since due to injuries. The bantamweight has also left former trainer Tony Borg and moved to Manchester to work with Jamie Moore.

We started with Welsh champion Kieran Gething and challenger Craig Woodruff, which you can still listen to on iTunes and SoundCloud. There’s still European title contender Jay Harris, hot prospect Rhys Edwards and top class trainer Gary Lockett to come later this week.

Thank you very much for listening. If you’ve enjoyed, please leave us a review on iTunes or SoundCloud and recommend us to any Welsh fight fans that you know. Feel free to send us some feedback on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, too.
