"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Animals Pt. 2 Fish

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Animals Pt. 2 Fish

We’re back with another podcast episode of our “Why Vegan” series, newly revamped and updated, exploring the reasons why making more vegan choices, and of course going vegan, can have such a positive impact in the world we live in. In this series on the benefits of eating a vegan diet we've covered the impact on our health, the environment and finally we've reached the reason I made this change over a decade ago, the animals.

In our last installment we talked about meat, and how our food choices impact the animals raised for its production. In today’s episode which is again all about the animals used for food, we’ll talk about fish and other sea animals.

It’s such a common question, “why don’t vegans eat fish, or prawns, shellfish or other seafood?”. Today I do my best to answer this question, specifically in regards to the animals.

We have this image of fish living in freedom until they’re caught, then going through a quick and less painful death than other animals killed for their meat. For other people, it’s also hard to see fish as they do mammals, or even birds. Today we’ll talk about fish, and I’ll share the research and information that helped me make up my mind when I went vegan, when I also had these prior beliefs, deciding that I would finally leave fish and other sea animals out of my plate.

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Animals Pt. 1 Meat

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Animals Pt. 1 Meat

As you know, we’ve started a brand new series in the podcast titled the “Why Vegan” Series, a newly revamped, re-recorded and updated version of our most beloved and downloaded series in the podcast. Through these episodes we’re going to share those big reasons why more and more people are deciding to move towards a more plant-based way of eating and going vegan. We've discussed the effects on going vegan when it comes to our health, our environment, and now it's finally time to begin with what was my personal “why”.

When I went vegan many years ago, it was learning about what happens to animals in our modern agriculture system and the meat, dairy and fishing industries that did it for me. Today I share a bit of what that journey was like, and I go deep into helping you understand what’s wrong with our treatment of animals in these industries. In today's episode, part 1 on animals, we'll begin by talking about meat consumption, with fish, dairy and eggs to follow in the next few weeks.

If you’re not sure if hearing about what happens to animals is something you’re ready for, I ask that you at least listen in to the first part of the episode. I’ll explain why this was such an important part of my journey, and I’ll also explain why I think that listening to these issues as a first approach can set you on your journey without it being as painful as watching graphic images, while definitely arming you with all the motivation needed to stick with this change.

The next few episodes are very deep and personal to me, and I hope that you love them too. They’re also a great resource to share with friends or family who ask you questions about the way you eat, as it’s as kind and compassionate towards the listener as it is towards the animals.

I finish the episode by talking about what happened to me when I saw these images and learned what I now know, and what made me make the connection that changed my life and my way of eating.

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Environment, the Effects of Going Vegan on our Planet

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and the Environment, the Effects of Going Vegan on our Planet

In today's episode of our "Why Vegan" series, we're talking about the impact eating a meat and dairy based diet has on our environment. Until I began to read about these issues, I had never really sat down to think about the chain of production of the foods I consumed, the resources these products required to land on supermarket shelves, let alone the huge consequences they had on our environment and our fellow humans and animals in turn. Today we explore all of these issues and I share some mind-blowing statistics, great studies and resources, finishing the episode off in a very positive light, with the hope that lies in knowing that we have so much power to make a change as individuals.

"Why Vegan" Series: Veganism and your Health, the Benefits of Going Vegan or Following a Plant Based Diet

One of our most downloaded series in the podcast is back! Our "Why Vegan" series is meant to give you all the information on why so many people are switching to a plant-based diet and a vegan lifestyle. Newly updated, revamped, including new information and data, all in the hopes that it continues to inspire you, or it serves to arm you with information and knowledge on some of these issues, or it serves as a great place to point people to who have questions and want an opener into these topics. We’ll be covering, the reasons why people go vegan when it comes to health (today’s episode), the environment, animals, our fellow humans, and an unexpected one that happened at least for me, going vegan and how it brought so many benefits to my relationship with food and body.

Today we'll be covering the evidence and link between vegan diets and health outcomes when it comes to some of the most common chronic diseases, I'll guide you to the scientific evidence and professionals who do such a great job at giving us or helping us understand the science behind dietary patterns. I'll talk a bit about my own journey and I'll share an important side of the equation (perhaps more than statistics in public health), that you should focus on when making the transition to a plant-based diet. We also talk about another important aspect of health on an individual and a more global scale that is closely linked to the farming of animals and more. If you've been wondering "is it safe and healthy to eat a vegan diet?" "will I get all the nutrients I need on a vegan diet?" or "will a plant-based diet help my health"?, we cover it all in this episode.

Caitlin Galer-Unti ,

One of my favourite podcasts

Brownble is one of my absolute favourite podcasts and one of the very best vegan podcasts out there (though Kim covers so many aspects of eating). I’ve loved it since I first heard it, which I think was a bit before I had the pleasure of meeting Kim in person. Kim has a really compassionate approach to veganism. Give it a listen — you’re bound to fall in love with her approach too!

So informtative

Kim takes you with her each week on a really informative, personal, funny and all round brilliant podcast. It always leaves me feeling empowered and confident to continue with my own Vegan learning. Kim discusses so many more topics than cooking! It's an easy listen and very well produced.
