Mr. Goblin's Henchman of Goblins Henchmen Podcast (https://anchor.fm/ghench) sent a message with two questions about AD&D - Magic Resistance and how spellbooks work in my campaign. I had great fun sharing the answers!

Episode 25 - AD&D Combat Demystified - Initiative for Spellcasting, Charging

Episode 25 - AD&D Combat Demystified - Initiative for Spellcasting, Charging

I'm challenging conventional wisdom that AD&D by-the-book combat is too difficult! In this episode, I visit initiative one more time to talk about melee with a spell-caster, and then I cover charging.

Episode 23 - Attracting Old School Game Players, Keeping Old School Elders

Episode 23 - Attracting Old School Game Players, Keeping Old School Elders

Taking a cue from how Tim Shorts of Gothridge Manor Podcast makes episodes in his car, I do some philosophizing about attracting players to old school games. I also talk about the difficulties of some of the elders of the RPG community have with the changing world.

On behalf of the Shorten family, we want to wish each and everyone of you a very Happy Holiday! Merry Christmas, if you celebrate. May your season be joyful and full of fellowship and games!

I'll have a "end of year wrapup" next week and then we'll get back to AD&D crunchy topics in January!

Episode 22 - Demystifying AD&D Combat - Surprise and Initiative

I'm challenging conventional wisdom that AD&D by-the-book combat is too difficult! In this episode, I review surprise and initiative and those dreaded words/phrases: "segments" and "weapon speed". Let's learn and see that a bit of crunchy AD&D combat doesn't have to be hard!

Amazing Podcast

Awesome podcast from really knowledgable person. As a new DM I learned a lot of small bits and pieces from listening you. Keep recording, you are doing a great job ;)

Great and useful advice.

This podcast caught my attention when I read that it was tackling the topic of Sandbox/Hexcrawl and really came in handy as I'm currently running one for my group.

I'm a DCC RPG Judge with little experience and fairly new to TTRPGs, everything Michael was talking about on that matter is applicable, I'll look forward to listening to more episodes and improve my skills.

The format is also very good, each episode is short and to the point so I can even come back to it if I need to refer back to a point without scrolling endlessly, fluff is cut to a minimum and the production value is neat.

Keep up the great work Michael !

Great New Old School RPG Podcast

The newest old school podcast has arrived: The Dungeon Master's Handbook, presented by veteran Dungeons & Dragons player Michael "Chgowiz" Shorten.

Served up in easily digestible episodes of 15-30 minutes duration, the four episodes to date (including an introductory 'episode zero') are packed full of useful titbits on running 'old school' style fantasy roleplaying games.

The first full episode was a walk-through of how Michael prepared a scenario to run at a convention, in four hours, and the following two episodes were breakdowns of his methods for creating an open 'sandbox' campaign setting.

Michael's application of the "rule of three" plays heavily into much of his creativity. It gives newcomers to the wide world of sandbox settings a sensibly small base to start their adventures from and an easy way to build it up from there.

He's a strong advocate of the idea that the gamesmaster only needs to stay one step ahead of his players ("just in time detailing"), there's no obligation to detail your entire world before the campaign begins, just prepare enough for games day and leave the rest in broad brushstrokes.

The most recent episode also deals with the simply online technology available to help you curate your campaign, from wikis to map-design software, as well as the benefit of encouraging - and taking note of - player input.

The Dungeon Master's Handbook is a great podcast for gamers who aspire to emulate the 'old school' sensibilities.

Michael's currently flying solo, which I like (I generally find podcasts with more than three voices tend to quickly degenerate into incomprehensible anarchy, and encourage off-putting 'in-jokes') and the production values, sound quality etc, are top-notch.
