Janet Lacey and (another!) Mark Harris guest on The Business Show 18th Feb 2021

The Business Show which was broadcast live on Marlow FM 97.5 on 18th Feb 2021 is now available here, with copyright material such as the news, adverts and music edited out. My guests on this show were Janet Lacey and Mark Harris. That’s not a typo – there were two people called Mark Harris on this show! You can connect with both guests via https://www.linkedin.com/in/janet-lacey-stelling-24034911/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/markharrismarketing/ respectively if you want to talk to either of them about their day job, or indeed about today’s show. What sort of holiday don’t I want? Find out at https://youtu.be/fUNTk5xsxk4, which was the opening track of the show. I start the show by talking to Janet Lacey about her business, details of which you can find at https://thelaceys.notjusttravel.com/ and yes, it’s been a tough year for the travel sector, but things are indeed looking up with people booking up. Mark Harris (the other one!) then talks with me about his business – Marketing Boost – about which you can find out more at http://www.marketingboost.co.uk/ including the marketing coaching that they offer, as well as the delivery. “Free” by Ultra Nate was Mark’s choice of music, for all of the people who now have the freedom to do what they want to do. You can hear it at https://youtu.be/JgRBkjgXHro. The offering from Buckinghamshire Business First detailed at https://bbf.uk.com/be-your-own-boss was the start point for our first business conversation, and we generally agreed it would have been great if we’d been offered something like that when we started our respective businesses. We each also disclose the one thing we wish we’d known before we started – what would we have told our younger selves. Janet’s music choice was “Leaving On a Jet Plane” by John Denver – no prizes for guessing why! You can hear it at https://youtu.be/SneCkM0bJq0 - 22 million people already have. Janet’s business news choice was https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/feb/10/salesforce-office-in-person-work-tech which talks about the change from face-to-face working and the change from 9-5 working, so that’s what we talk about. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56023932 will take you to Mark’s choice of story for us to discuss – is the world of business changing such that we’re taking order from an AI system, rather than from a person? There aren’t may songs about marketing or involving the word boost, so for Mark I played us out with a song by another Harris – “Summer” by Calvin Harris - you can find it at https://youtu.be/ebXbLfLACGM which has a mere 1.4 billion views so far. I hope you enjoy the show! To connect directly with me, go to https://www.linkedin.com/in/enterprisedoctor/. This content is copyright Marlow FM Ltd 2021. Why does IP matter to a small business?

Why does IP matter to a small business?

John Pryor of Exalt IP guests on today’s podcast. So, what leads someone into the world of intellectual property, and what makes John a little different from others in that world, and why does he focus on small and medium sized businesses? After exploring that, we then look at what exactly is it that you need to protect, how someone else might benefit from stealing it, and how you can stop them. IP protection costs, but there are benefits. We next have a conversation about weighing up those two things. However, there are four free components of intellectual property you can start to practice today – the rest of the show covers those off - listen in to hear about them. You can learn more with a free half an hour with John – his contact details are below. Talking about his business, John says “The majority of the value in any business is not in physical things like buildings and machinery, but intangible things like brand, innovation and relationships. I help organisations to create, manage and develop the value from their intangible assets. Unfortunately this subject is too often neglected due to the confusing legal language used and apparent expense. My goal is to help you get the most from your intangible assets whilst spending your money wisely. There are quite a few things you can and should do for free and I will help you with these, whilst advising of other aspects you may like to consider.“. Rachel Allen & Nick Bright guest on The Business Show 4th Feb 2021

Rachel Allen & Nick Bright guest on The Business Show 4th Feb 2021

The Business Show which was broadcast live on Marlow FM 97.5 on 4th Feb 2021 is now available here, with copyright material such as the news, adverts and music edited out. My guests on this show were Rachel Allen and Nick Bright. You can connect with them via https://www.linkedin.com/in/rachelemilyallen/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/nzbright/ respectively if you want to talk to either of them about their day job, or indeed about today’s show. I say in the show that listeners can only hear “Sweet Dreams My LA Ex” by Rachel Stevens, but you can both see and hear it at https://youtu.be/L173wbF4g4c - don’t forget to come back to the podcast after you’ve watched it! I first talk to Rachel about her business, Making Business Social, details of which you can find at https://makingbusinesssocial.co.uk/ , and how she teaches people how to do social media, rather than doing it for them. I then chat with Nick about his business, https://www.photosbybright.com/ , and it leads to an intriguing conversation about paperclips! “Independent Women” by Destiny’s Child was Rachel’s choice of music, for all of the people on their own right now. You can hear it at https://youtu.be/0lPQZni7I18 . The story at https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/28/marketing-myths-busted-expert-social-media-visibilty-13491204/ sparked out first conversation, not least because Rachel features in the article! As well as discussing the article, we talk about how to get your name in the papers, and the business benefits (and risks!) of doing so. Nick’s music choice was “Can’t Stop” from Red Hot Chilli Peppers – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/8DyziWtkfBw We then had an alcohol based conversation (not an alcohol fuelled one) prompted by Nick’s find at https://metro.co.uk/2020/10/14/brewdog-and-aldi-team-up-to-launch-limited-edition-ald-ipa-13419567/ - a brilliant example of collaborative working and collaborative marketing. The coming gigabit broadband services was our next conversation, with Marlow to be an early adopter, as mentioned in the story at https://www.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/19050849.bucks-sees-swish-fibre-broadband-begin-building-work/ . That story is mostly about road works! Our conversation was mostly about the business benefits of gigabit broadband. Are there any? Robot deliveries in Milton Keynes? Really?? Yup, as per https://www.mkfm.com/news/local-news/company-behind-milton-keynes-starship-robots-celebrates-1-million-deliveries-worldwide/ . But how does that work for Milton Keynes businesses, and will robots cope with pavements which are not perfect? I started the show with a song by Rachel for Rachel. I close the show with a song for Mr Bright, called “Mr Brightside” (by The Killers) – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/gGdGFtwCNBE . I hope you enjoy the show! I guest on The Business Show 21st Jan 2021

I guest on The Business Show 21st Jan 2021

The Business Show which was broadcast live on Marlow FM 97.5 on 28th Jan 2021 is now available here, with copyright material such as the news, adverts and music edited out. This wasn’t my show, it was Lawrence Wood’s show, but I was his guest and he’s kindly allowed me to put it out as a podcast – thanks for having me Lawrence, and for letting me do this. The reason this happened? Because I’ve just launched a new business – After Redundancy. The website was nearly live when we were broadcasting, but it’s definitely live now, and already helping people – you can visit it at https://afterredundancy.co.uk/ - please do, and please do share it with anyone for whom you think it may be useful. My first choice of music was “We can work it out” by The Beatles, because that’s the point of my new business – life can be a challenge for sure, but we can work it out. If you want to hear it, you’ll find it at https://youtu.be/Qyclqo_AV2M along with a genuine black and white video! We then start a conversation about After Redundancy, who it helps, how it came to be, and how I help people at various stages of “the redundancy journey”. As per the standard format of Lawrence’s show, I then do my 60-second pitch and answer the surprisingly difficult question (at that moment!) of how to contact the business. “Let’s work together” by Canned Heat seemed like a pertinent title, so was my next choice – hear it for yourself at https://youtu.be/elurOwLc1LM . I’m then given an opportunity to go into more detail about how the business helps people at whatever phase of the redundancy journey they’re at, before we play “Don’t stop believing” by Journey – a song relevant for the title, the message, and even the name of the band! You can hear an excellent live version of it at https://youtu.be/VcjzHMhBtf0 . Our final conversation, as always with Lawrence’s show, is to talk about the guest’s favourite networking group With me being me, I chose two. You’ll have to listen to the show to find out why, but as promised, links to info on each can be found at https://enterprisedoctor.co.uk/ and https://henleybusinesspartnership.co.uk/3fm/ respectively. The show closes with “Keep on keepin’ on” by Valley of Wolves – Lawrence’s choice, but a great on. If you want to hear it, you can do so at https://youtu.be/M-cMYgI5IlI . I hope you enjoy the show! Rai Richardson & Jay Blake guest on The Business Show 21st Jan 2021

Rai Richardson & Jay Blake guest on The Business Show 21st Jan 2021

The Business Show which was broadcast live on Marlow FM 97.5 on 21st Jan 2021 is now available here, with copyright material such as the news, adverts and music edited out. My guests on this show were Jay Blake and Rai Richardson. You can connect with them via https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayblakemarlow/ and https://www.linkedin.com/in/raimonda/ respectively if you want to talk to either of them about their day job, or indeed about today’s show. Phil Spector is a controversial character, but despite that today's opening music The Crystals with Da Doo Ron Ron, which you can see and hear at https://youtu.be/L0dikX80Ed8 - don’t forget to come back to the podcast after you’ve watched it! I first talk to Jay about his business, My Digital Village, details of which you can find at https://mydigitalvillage.co.uk/ - go there to see the graphics we talk about, as well as for a general look around!. I then chat with Rai about her business, https://force4events.co.uk/. A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman was Rai’s choice of music. Well, not actually hers – you’ll have to listen to find out what I mean by that. You can hear it at https://youtu.be/pSQk-4fddDI . The story at https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/18/clubhouse-app-chat-rooms/ kicked off our conversation about Clubhouse, the new(ish) audio app which is sort of a cross between talk radio and a huge WhatsApp group! Listen in to find out more. Jay’s music choice was Fight Song by Rachel Platten – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/xo1VInw-SKc . The conversation about winter walks which Rai’s find at https://www.getreading.co.uk/whats-on/family-kids-news/best-wintry-walks-berkshire-weekend-19618440 started off wasn’t really about winter walks, it was about the mental health of both solopreneurs and he employed. Our final business conversation starts by looking at the petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/567747 which you may (or may not!) want to sign – spoiler alert – we all thought it a good idea. I close the show with another Phil Spector influenced track, Be My Baby by The Ronettes – you can hear it at https://youtu.be/jSPpbOGnFgk. I hope you enjoy the show! The radio show’s Facebook group is at https://www.facebook.com/groups/thebusinessshow and the podcast Facebook group is at https://www.facebook.com/groups/enterprisedoctorbusinessshow - please do join either or both, to chat with today’s guests, with previous guests, with me, and with other listeners.
