Signature Pubs & Cold Town Beer - COLD AS F***

Signature Pubs & Cold Town Beer - COLD AS F***

In this episode, we have the privilege of hosting a distinguished guest, Louise Maclean, Director of Signature Pubs and Cold Town Beer, a leading figure in the FMCG sector.

Cold Town Brewery has a rich and captivating history deeply intertwined with Scotland's brewing heritage. Their story begins with a nod to the brewing legacy of Edinburgh's Calton Hill Brewery, which pioneered lager production in Britain way back in 1835. Nestled in the chilly shadow of Arthur's Seat, the brewery's neighborhood earned the moniker "Cauld Toon," eventually evolving into "Cal-ton." This evolution of language gave birth to the name Cold Town Hill, serving as the foundation for the brewery's identity.
In early 2018, Cold Town Brewery embarked on its journey, starting as a modest microbrewery within the walls of an abandoned church in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Grassmarket district. Despite humble beginnings, their dedication to crafting exceptional brews was unwavering, supplying local venues and gaining a foothold in the city's vibrant bar scene. Their full range of beers was refined through collaboration with industry professionals who reveled in the art of fine libations. After numerous iterations and feedback, they proudly introduced their signature creation: Cold Town Lager.

As their reputation grew, more establishments welcomed Cold Town Brewery into their fold, prompting the need for expansion. They established their main operations on Dunedin Street in order to cater to a diverse array of bars and restaurants throughout Scotland. In early 2019, their journey came full circle as they transformed their original microbrewery location into Cold Town House, a place that not only houses an evolved brewing facility but also offers breathtaking views of Edinburgh Castle beneath the imposing castle rock. It's a story that reflects their unwavering commitment to crafting exceptional beer in the heart of Scotland's capital.

Lochlea Distillery - From Burns to Barley

Lochlea Distillery - From Burns to Barley

In this episode, we speak to David Ferguson, Commercial Director of Lochlea Distilling Co.

Lochlea had always been a dairy farm, up until 2006. They farmed pedigree beef cattle until 2014, when they decided that for a farm of this size to be viable, they needed to do something very different.

Barley had historically been grown on the farm, mainly as livestock feed, and so in 2015 they embarked on an experiment: growing 50 acres of malting barley.

Construction began in 2017, converting the former piggery, byre, and midden in the heart of the farm steading into the distillery, and repurposing the cattle sheds into bonded warehouses.

They secured all of the licenses in 2018, and the distillery was commissioned in August 2018.
Since then, they have been growing the barley and the distillery team have been skillfully and patiently making spirit.

During the chat with David, we discuss:

I love listening to business podcasts, a colleague recommended this one for a ‘bit of everything’ and they hit the nail on the head. Another one I’ve subscribed to and look forward to new episodes every week

Can’t get enough

I stumbled across this podcast on social media, listened to the episode with Mark Wright and that was it, I started working my way through the older episodes. Keep up the good work

DJW@indigo ,

Geniunely Useful Content great presentation style..

So many business podcasts are just not interesting enough to listen to. Harlands have taken a different approach and each episode is an interesting insight into I guess a Harlands client or related business . It knocks the socks other firms offerings and is genuinely useful. The latest episode on a subject close to my heart was particularly relevant. I wonder how firms who still do tax cards and newletters in reception are going to compete. Brillant work Darren!
