Director André Øvredal on Mortal, Troll Hunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe & how he makes movies

Director André Øvredal on Mortal, Troll Hunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe & how he makes movies

Today we welcome folklore-horror director André Ovredal to discuss his new indie horror Mortal. Known for his found-footage modern masterpiece Troll Hunter as well as the chilling The Autopsy of Jane Doe, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark André chats to Giles and Andy about his craft and process from pitch to shoot, including working with other top tier horror directors like Guillermo del Toro.
André covers the road to his first feature Future Murder which he wrote in 8 days whilst at film school, how he used this to move to commercials in the US and Norway, before developing the concept for Troll Hunter and eventually pitching it to a producer.
We get the insight into how a found-footage faux-documentary approach re-defined the filmmaking rules for André, the success of Troll Hunter before the challenges of finding the next project. André discusses receiving the script for The Autopsy of Jane Doe, pitching for it and being inspired by The Conjuring and Seven
Finally, we cover the development and production of Mortal, working with a Norwegian production, chasing the daylight on a winter shoot and working on VFX whilst directing Scary Stories with Guillermo del Toro

How to Move from Commercials, Shorts and Docs to Indie Features with Ben Mole & Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar.

How to Move from Commercials, Shorts and Docs to Indie Features with Ben Mole & Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar.

Today we welcome back producer Lucinda Rhodes Thakrar as well as director Ben Mole to talk about their WW2 indie Behind the Line: Escape to Dunkirk.

We dive into how writer/director Ben Mole came up with a fresh concept for a WW2 thriller, how Lucinda and rallied an art department meticulous enough to handle 1940’s’ period accuracy - and how a simple coffee in a Colchester car park can lead to a great collaboration.

Just like a classic genre flick, Behind the Line was shot back to back with this years earlier release We Go in at Dawn. Ben and Lucinda tell us how they did it without compromising on the high standards of a period war film.

How to Direct Bruce Willis in an indiefilm with Matt Eskandari on 'Survive the Night'

How to Direct Bruce Willis in an indiefilm with Matt Eskandari on 'Survive the Night'

On this week's episode, we welcome writer and director Matt Eskandari to discuss his career which includes three collaborations with action superstar Bruce Willis. From the recently released Survive the Night, to their first feature together Trauma Center, and the upcoming Hard Kill.

Matt lets us in on his approach to building a good rapport with bigger name actors, tells us the benefits of learning about cinema history and how he made his first short with off-cuts of 35mm film given to him by Sir Ridley Scott.

We also discuss Matt's claustrophobic thriller 12 Feet Deep which got him noticed by agents and led to his first collaboration with Bruce. Matt tells us how he used just a single location and the power of subtle camera movement to achieve his intent.

And finally: have you ever wondered how Bruce Willis would act if he had starred in Micheal Mann's Heat? Matt shares some behind the scenes secrets where Bruce gave alternate takes for him at a Pacino-like level. Take a listen to find out.

How to Make a Independent Sports Crime Drama with the team behind ‘Break’

On this episode, we welcome the team behind Break, a competitive sports/crime drama from first-time writer/director Michael Elkin, first-time producer Terri Dwyer and veteran producer Dean Fisher

Giles discusses scripting with Michael and the challenges of getting the film financed and greenlit with Terri and Dean, including their pitch deck and presentation strategies to individual investors. They also talk about purposefully incorporating international elements to the story such as filming in China as well as on location and set in the UK.

As an actor/director Michael lets us in on his approach to working with the cast, Terri gives tips on balancing her producer role with her own role as an actor. Dean provides unique and empowering examples of how a film of this budget level and genre can be marketed, sold and self-distributed in the UK, even during the current COVID social restrictions.

Invaluable and Enjoyable.

Awesome to listen to these deep dives into not just the films, but different peoples roles in them. This podcast has been a really useful gateway to other sources through its guests, like Alex Ferrari and his Indie Film Hustle.
I'm not listening to much music at the moment because I keep taking these conversations for a walk, but its such good fuel and I appreciate it.
Really good fun and informal too.
Recommended.

Invaluable

I spent a long time regretting never going to film school or wishing I COULD go. Since discovering this podcast I haven’t had that thought it once-

It’s a saviour in many ways. Every single aspect of film making is covered: from conception right up to the viewer watching it on whatever screen they do, and it is covered by people who have actually done it. There isn’t a school anywhere that could teach you that, especially not with teachers of this calibre and hands on the ground experience. An invaluable podcast. Thank you so much Giles
