Welcome to The Jewellerian, the podcast about magnificent jewels and their stories; with me Josie Goodbody, jewellery historian and author of the Jemima Fox Jewellery mystery series, which have just been optioned for adaption to the screen.
I have loved stories for almost as long as I can remember, in fact – just a little longer than I have loved jewels! And over the past two decades of working in the jewellery and gemstone world, I have learned more and more insane stories partly in my research for my own novels and the vast library of books I have on the subject. The novels that I write are based on real life jewellery mysteries - starting in the past and brought into the present day - where, hopefully the mystery is solved. I have written four, the last of which is set in Paris and will be out by the end of 2021.
So tales are there to be told – and it is in this vein that I decided to launch this podcast – to open even more people’s eyes to the extraordinary stories behind some of the most well-known gemstones, and many of those you might never have heard of – but which have been worn and loved by some very lucky people! Or indeed with some – not so lucky… have you heard of the king’s cursed opal?
I will be interviewing historians, collectors and curators from all around the world about this fascinating subject – we’ll hear about mysterious jewels, their curses, their disappearances; jewellery maisons – one of which has been around since the early 1600s and made jewels for Queens Marie de Medici and Marie Antoinette.
I will also be talking about the collections of some iconic women such as Elizabeth Taylor, the Duchess of Windsor, Marjorie Merriweather Post, Barbara Hutton, Queens and Empresses of Europe; and not forgetting the men – Kazumi Arikawa and Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Thani, whose collection I wrote about when it was on show at London’s V&A museum.
