Coming Out, Expressive Individualism and Evangelical Testimonies: What's the Link? || SLP377

Tonight on the SpeakEasy, Glen Scrivener and Nate Morgan Locke discuss the prevalence of expressive individualism. Modern people focus on ourselves, our journeys, our identities. We minimise the influence of history, family, culture, institutions—even biology. Instead we spotlight our personal experience and individual choices. But why?

The turn towards the self took a decisive step in 1517 and evangelicals have been treading the path ever since. Are we to blame for this massive emphasis on "identity"?

What Can We Learn from Mars Hill || Interview with Liam Thatcher || SLP373

The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill has been a fascinating podcast-documentary about Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church in Seattle. Recently Liam Thatcher blogged about its brilliance, its significance and our challenges in receiving it rightly. The article has been hugely popular as well as receiving good natured pushback. Here Glen Scrivener and Nate Morgan Locke discuss the podcast, its reception (especially on Twitter) and what we can learn from both the catastrophe at Mars Hill as well as this kind of journalism.

For such a time as this

Glen and Paul are for such a time as this! A time when we need online content that is not only full of Jesus but is ABLE AND WILLING to speak to the crucial issues of the moment. Glen and Paul have a great communication gift and their organisation excels in online media, but they also have a willingness and a courage to speak up on abuse, on scandals, on hard topics - they bring more gentleness and nuance than social media tends to but more boldness and clarity than Christians tend to! Needed. Excellent. Truly prophetic.
