    Episode 10: Serial Killers

    Episode 10: Serial Killers

Our foray into the Halloween-ish continues with serial killers. Clayton's pick: The Element of Crime (Lars von Trier, 1984); Ryan's pick: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Tom Tykwer, 2006); Isaac's pick: Man Bites Dog (Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, Benoit Poelvoorde, 1992).

Tangents include: sushi, borrowing from Tarkovsky, smell-o-vision, Kurosawa's later years, praise and ambivalence for Christopher Guest, the psychological difference between real and fake violence via stupid people on message boards, snuff films by Mel Gibson and criterion comedies.

In reference to the discussion on Man Bites Dog, from IMDB: "According to an essay André wrote, Ben's family didn't know anything about the plot of the film. Ben's mother and grandparents thought they were filming raw footage of Ben, and had no idea that the footage was going to be used in a film in which Ben is a serial killer. Ben's mother was shocked to see her son behind bars, when she comes to visit him in prison."
