In this week's episode, I am chatting with Dr Jenna Brough who is a perinatal clinical psychologist. We get into a deep discussion about the term 'normal' and how it relates to birth. How medicalised birth and intervention is seen as the norm and how most recommendations for intervention are based on fear of litigation.

Episode 56 - Maternity Services Past and Present - With Midwife Sheena Byrom

Episode 56 - Maternity Services Past and Present - With Midwife Sheena Byrom

In this episode, I am chatting to the lovely Sheena Byrom, as she shares her story of working in the maternity system, and what it has been like from the 1970's - to the current day.

Sheena talks of her time as a student, and how her career has led her through many different roles, finally becoming the head of midwifery for a large trust - which included setting up 3 midwife-led units.  Her insights were fascinating, and it wasn't always easy for Sheena as she describes terrible bullying and a 9-year court case that affected her whole family.  She now works hard to bring focus to respectful midwifery care and works alongside her daughter Anna producing valuable resources and information for both midwives and parents.

Episode 55 - In conversation with human rights lawyer Hermine Hayes-Klein

Episode 55 - In conversation with human rights lawyer Hermine Hayes-Klein

In this week's episode, I had the privilege of chatting to the incredible human rights lawyer Hermine Hayes-Klein, who shares so much of her knowledge of the law of informed consent and refusal in relation to a pregnant woman or person's rights in childbirth.

Hermine and I chat in detail about how to provide support during this time, as partners, doulas, or family members - in order to make sure that as advocates, we fully understand our role.

The sound quality isn't great, as Hermine was out and about, but I promise you it is well worth listening to.

You can find out more about Hermine through her law practice - https://www.hayeskleinlaw.com

Essential listening!

As a birth doula I always recommend this podcast to the families I work with. Everyone should take advantage of Sallyann’s vast knowledge and experience. There’s no jargon, it’s amazing for people with no knowledge of birth but equally, those who work in this world every day!

Excellent vital and informative

SallyAnn speaks such calm sense with gentle authority! She says it like it is, and gives us a sense that we can actually do this, empower ourselves to love and be transformed by our births

Absolutely recommended

As a birthkeeper and doula and fully trained midwife, SallyAnn is my absolute go-to recommendation for all birthing people, especially where partners need that little bit more support in understanding the birth process and questions they may have regarding safety, etc. The information she gives is second-to-none for understanding at a lay-person level. Even if you’re a trained midwife you will learn something!
