Episode 11: Google didn't have answers for me. What I decided to do next changed everything

According to Google, no one else on the planet had the symptoms that I was experiencing.
I searched and scoured and asked around and came up with ...nothing.
Why was this happening to me?

I was following “the rules” –all the steps that I was told would eventually, maybe one day, lead to my happiness and life fulfillment.
Little did I know that I was missing a crucial ingredient.
    (Quite a few actually)
Listen to this episode now to hear what I was doing wrong.
Even though I was stubborn and didn’t want to believe this to be true, living in denial started to hurt me and everyone I loved, quite literally.
Thankfully, there was a very distinct moment in August of 2013 when everything changed.
It changed the trajectory of my life forever.
Listen to this episode to hear EVERYTHING.

Episode 10: The Truth About Sulfates In Your Body Care Products And The Courage It Takes To Rise Again with Special Guest Angela from PUR Home

Episode 10: The Truth About Sulfates In Your Body Care Products And The Courage It Takes To Rise Again with Special Guest Angela from PUR Home

    Making laundry detergent is easy.
Running a business is something else.
Angela has an obsession with ingredients and concocting potions and products that are good for your home, body, and the environment.
Listen to this episode to learn how she got started (very humble beginnings) and what happened when someone plagiarized her work, as well as how she really feels about sulfates and chemicals and living a non-toxic lifestyle - it may surprise you!
We also discuss the behind-the-scenes of running a business, what she learned when she went plastic-free in her business, and her thoughts on when to make hard decisions in your business.
I ask Angela to help us figure out what products on the shelves out there are really what they preach (hello, greenwashing much?) and how to lessen your toxic load when it comes to household products.
If you think that some people are successful because they just “got lucky,” you might be encouraged to know that Angela has overcome pretty much any and all obstacles and trials.
We discuss the very real phenomenon of family and friends being the most negative and unsupportive people when you are working on your dreams, and how difficult but necessary some boundary-setting can be, especially when it involves childhood abuse and trauma.
Some other things we touch on are upper limit problems, how to believe in your dreams when you want to give up, what worthiness looks like, and how much shifted for Angela after a good coaching session.
If you want to meet a beautiful soul who is changing the world simply by creating laundry detergent, don’t miss this episode.
    Remember, it's all possible.
About the guest: Angela is the CEO of PUR Home and is the formulator and product developer. She is passionate about natural products and began her journey into eco-friendly living 7 years ago when she made her first ever natural bar of soap. She has been obsessed ever since. Episode 9: Let’s Go There: Divorce (And How This Helped Me During My Fourth Trimester)

Nothing requires courage like picking up all the broken pieces of your heart.
In this episode, I share exactly what I had to do to face each new day after my divorce.
It changed me, yes, but not in the way that you might think.
Even though I felt all the natural emotions like grief, sadness, anger, depression, denial, and anxiety, it didn’t leave me bitter and resentful in the long run.
Instead, I was able to set myself up for success, with the help of some very wise people, one in particular who impacted me profoundly during the darkest night of my soul, and I share all the details of what transpired that night.
Listen to this episode to hear the truth about everything I was feeling and thinking about during this divorce and how I handled friendships and family during this vulnerable time.
I also read a beautiful and powerful letter that my friend Reema Zaman wrote me that she later published on Medium, and I share my reflection on all of this as well as how I found myself thinking back to her words when I was going through my postpartum journey.
If you have ever endured any kind of loss or heartbreak, this episode is sure to leave you with some encouragement and understanding of the pain and hurt and helplessness you have felt.

Episode 8: Why Aren’t We All Talking About This? The Courage It Takes To Parent When You Have a History of Trauma with Special Guest Kristin

Episode 8: Why Aren’t We All Talking About This? The Courage It Takes To Parent When You Have a History of Trauma with Special Guest Kristin

One of the most difficult things you can do is parent when you have a history of trauma.
When you don't have a positive example of what a good parent should be, you question everything you're doing, while also feeling as if you are starting behind everyone else on their parenting journeys. It can feel overwhelming to parent yourself at the same time that you are parenting your kids, and you usually end up sacrificing yourself or losing yourself because you don’t know what else to do.
In this episode, my guest Kristin shares the real and raw truth of what it’s like to grow up in an unhealthy environment and how that affected her when she first became a parent at 25 years old. We discuss her personal journey into wanting to change her life and how she noticed the patterns of abuse and trauma repeating into adulthood even when she thought all of that was behind her. She talks about how she worked through and processed her triggers and allowed herself to grow and change, even though she was all alone in this journey.
We talk about how brave it is to parent with a history of trauma, where to start when you want to change patterns, how to navigate your own triggers while taking care of your little ones, and the truth about her relationship with her husband that may surprise you - it totally surprised me!
We also discuss negative coping skills, being misdiagnosed with ADHD when it was actually trauma, where to start making changes if you feel that your history of trauma is affecting your relationships and your parenting, and what happens to your brain when you are living under a constant state of stress.
Listen to this episode if you want to hear a real, honest discussion on the courage it takes to parent when you yourself grew up in an environment of abuse, trauma, and/or drama.
    About the guest:
Kristin is a nature-loving bibliophile, herbalist-wannabe, travel lover, and night-sky-gazing Mom of three on a Spiritual journey. She likes holidays, hiking, eating healthy food, over-researching every decision she makes, and traveling.

Episode 7: My Birth Story (Welcome Zen!)

Episode 7: My Birth Story (Welcome Zen!)

If you are pregnant and/or looking for uplifting and positive birth stories for inspiration, you are definitely in the right place!!
I’ve never shared my birth story officially, so if you’ve ever been curious about my birth story, I invite you to press play, sit back, and enjoy the ride.
Listen in as I open up about the details of my home birth and what it was like as a first time mom going through labor and delivery in the comfort of my own home (giving birth in the water in a birthing tub!), and some of the things that helped me feel grounded and strong as I went into this new and unfamiliar territory.
I talk about the book Ina May’s Guide To Childbirth, and how I had to set really strong boundaries around myself due to my sensitive and vulnerable nature while pregnant.
I also share my love of the online prenatal exercise program called One Strong Mama that I used during pregnancy which helped me to feel my healthiest and strongest while carrying my baby inside my belly and how it prepared me mentally, emotionally, and physically for what to expect during labor, delivery, AND postpartum, which I found to be immensely helpful!
If you are questioning whether a home birth is right for you, or you're wondering what midwives really do at a home birth, or even what it’s like to labor in the water, I open up and share it all in this episode!

Episode 6: Generational Changes in Parenting and Healing The Mother Wound With Lela

Episode 6: Generational Changes in Parenting and Healing The Mother Wound With Lela

If you are pregnant, please skip this episode and come back to it when you’re ready for it. I believe in protecting your mind and energy, especially when you are in this beautiful and vulnerable season of your life when preparing to give birth. xoxo
Sometimes the worst abuse comes from those who were supposed to love you the most. And then when kids come into the picture, you often see that you have a lot of unhealed wounds from your own childhood that are affecting how you parent today.
In this episode, my friend Lela shares her experiences breaking negative generational patterns and mothering differently than how she was raised.
We go into detail discussing Lela’s pregnancy with her first child and what her birth as a mother looked like, as well as her postpartum journey when things turned out very different than she expected. We also unravel some of the toxic parenting she grew up with and how that showed up again when she became a mom.
We discuss ancestral healing, “The Mother Wound,” the differences in running a business versus being a parent, becoming a mom later in life after 35 years old, the Spirit Babies book, emotional intelligence and how to raise children consciously when you are working through the rage and anger connected to your upbringing, and what to do when your parents were narcissists and breaking negative familial patterns. “Because I gave you life and you owe me everything” was something that Lela heard from her parents growing up.
If you feel like you are fighting an uphill battle when all you want to do is raise loving and compassionate children, this episode is for you. Lela shows us that it is possible to work through and release these patterns and to be the parent you want to be.
press play and listen to this episode now!
Lela is a mother, biologist, author, educator, entrepreneur and scuba instructor. She spends her days with children and loves making yummy snacks from scratch using wholesome ingredients. Her favorite pastimes outside the home are swimming and being underwater for its peacefulness.

Beautiful, inspirational, intimate and as real as motherhood gets

Yes, yes, yes. It does take a lot of effort to put into place all the self love we know we need and deserve as mums. That self love extends to our family and makes us all happy. That self love is needed. I’m in love with this podcast because it talks so beautifully and intimately about motherhood and us mothers, and our extraordinary journey. Melissa has such a calming and inspirational perspective and I’m so grateful that she is sharing it with the world though the worthy mama.
