Energy Transition with Alan Bates, CEO Guernsey Electricity

Energy Transition with Alan Bates, CEO Guernsey Electricity

"Powering life today and tomorrow" is the Guernsey Electricity motto. Such a simple phrase encapsulates the ethos of sustainable development - to enable wellbeing and life on the planet while leaving the conditions fit-for-purpose for them to thrive in the future.
While energy underpins the rise of human civilisations, the unsustainable use of fossil fuels that emit Greenhouse Gases such as Carbon Dioxide is bringing us to the brink of irreversible damage and collapse through global warming, ocean acidification, wasteful and polluting production and overconsumption.
We interview Alan Bates, CEO of Guernsey Electricity about the energy trilemma, their new sustainability plans, the key role of the business in enabling the island energy transition, the advantages of commercialisation and government ownership, and the priority to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Alan stressed the need for innovation, for "failing fast and failing cheap" and to be on top of the technological developments in renewables, battery storage, smart grid to not fall behind.
His message that "There is no Do Nothing" scenario is a sobering call for action for government, business and civic society.

Let's Talks About Food with India Hamilton

Let's Talks About Food with India Hamilton

The episode is an attempt to deep-dive into food systems and regenerative agriculture. Very quickly, we learn that defining "regenerative agriculture" and "sustainable food systems" is not an easy task or a black and white answer.
For India, sustainable food systems are those that help "build communities while distributing equity along the supply chain" and in doing so using fewer chemicals.
India talks about the trust we place daily in household food brands without knowing the provenance of all of the ingredients. Studies show that up to 70% of global food supplies may be subject to fraud in labeling and ingredient additions. The food supply is simply too long and crosses too many borders allowing for mistakes, misinformation and manipulation along the way.
She is passionate about the subject of communities and how a visioning of a different food system needs to be embedded in communities that take back the power to decide on their future and food choices.
We explore the distinction between local and localism and how the later may provide the much-needed answers for building more resilient and empowered communities.
India shares with us the story of the Jersey Sustainable Co-Operative and inspires us to take action and become educated about our food choices.
    About India
India Hamilton MA, Food Systems Consultant. She is a Le Cordon Bleu Chef and has been a part of the innovative food scene in London since 2012, delivering creative projects for clients such as IKEA, Sainsbury’s and has recently exhibited in the Wellcome Trust. Following success in Hyderabad designing a sustainable food system, India returned to Jersey and co-founded SCOOP, The Sustainable Cooperative. With multiple awards under her belt and years of "pop up" experiences, India is focused on pushing the boundaries of the food system through embedding food experiences into local food contexts.
    About Sustainable Co-Operative Jersey
The Sustainable Cooperative is a low/no waste community shop that aims to create a more sustainable supply of food on the island of Jersey. Food that doesn't cost the earth.

Entrepreneurial State and Risk-Taking with Martyn Dorey

Entrepreneurial State and Risk-Taking with Martyn Dorey

Economic theory and modelling are all-pervasive in our modern life. We explore the fallacies behind modelling assumptions and talk about "first principles" that one could use to design models for post Covid-19 recovery.
We discuss the heavy reliance of island communities like Guernsey and Jersey on the State, given that majority of infrastructure is States-owned. The government can and must play a key role in enabling innovation and entrepreneurship and research shows (Entrepreneurial State by Mariana Mazzucato) that R&D played the defining role to create many of the tech innovations we all enjoy.
Governments can help derisk the innovation process while creating governance structures such as Economic Development Boards to execute on ambitions plans and to unleash entrepreneurial potential.
Martyn's key message focuses on having a recovery vision and taking risks.
    About Martyn Dorey
Guernsey man, investment actuary, founder of Dorey Financial Modelling (DFM), an actuarial technology firm.  DFM is a small enterprise supporting decision making and risk analysis in government, and on institutional and private wealth assets totalling in excess of £1,000 billion.
Martyn was a consultant for three of the top UK investment consulting firms and won UK national awards for innovation such as the Society of Actuaries ‘paper of the year’ in 2005 and was rated top UK talk on the Geometry of Finance in 2012.  He also developed a little known statistical distribution the “d distribution” which uses a different “number system” to capture real-world dependencies.
Martyn is Ex-President of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce 2016-2018, co-founder of legal technology start-up Ozoris and founder of C3M, a project to put fixed link infrastructure from Guernsey to France.

Food Waste and Activism with Elis Joudalova

Food Waste and Activism with Elis Joudalova

Up to a third(1) of all food produced is wasted in the process of food growth, harvest, supply chain, binning by supermarkets and household waste. If only a fraction of this "wasted" food was salvaged it would be enough to eliminate hunger and malnutrition.
As our population keeps growing and land use changing to support more and more intensive agriculture, the pressure on our planet from the unsustainable food ecosystem has never been higher. Depending on where you are in the world, agriculture and land-use change, which often accompanies the need for agricultural expansion, are together among the top 2-5 most important contributing factors to climate change.
What may be inappropriately dabbed as "waste", is usually viable for consumption.
In this episode, we explore this pertinent subject with entrepreneur and activist Elis Joudalova, a resident of the island of Jersey and founder of the OLIO community hubs in Jersey, Guernsey and Stockholm. She is a food waste and circular economy professional with a contagious passion for food, environment and community empowerment.
We talk about why food waste and its twin social issue of food poverty, present everywhere, including the relatively affluent island communities of Jersey and Guernsey. We see how technology, innovation and design can be the modern power for positive change.
Last but not least, you cannot stop but get inspired by Elis' infectious optimism and willingness to stand for what she believes in to be the change you want to see in the world!

Green Recovery and Green Growth with Estelle Levin-Nally

Green Recovery and Green Growth with Estelle Levin-Nally

The need for economic recovery stimulus packages post Covid19 pandemic is indisputable. But the decision to act is the easy part.
What should these packages look like, what kind of recovery should they support, what conditionality may they need attached?
In this episode, we explore the idea for a Green Recovery underpinning future Green Growth with our guest Estelle Levin-Nally, founder and CEO of a social venture and consultancy Levin Sources.
From the UN and the UK Green Party, to the governments of New Zealand, Canada and France, the call and commitment for embedding sustainability and climate change mitigation into the economic bailouts and recovery plans has never been louder.
The good news is that green recovery may give governments the best return for the buck while creating more sustainable and resilient economies that can better withstand future crises.

Episode 2

Just wanted to say thank you for creating this debate platform and I wish you huge success.

We need to have these discussions to obtain what I’m sure will be varied and at times opposing opinions! Hopefully though there will many innovative ideas no one has yet even thought of for ways we can move forward in positive and productive ways to truly make Guernsey ‘The best(and happiest) place to live’.

I will msg you separately with my ramblings but one thing I omitted was thoughts around the fishing market. You mentioned 90% or similar of our fish caught goes out of Guernsey to UK and Europe. A thought might be to look at creating opportunities for businesses (even closed restaurants/hotels (with commercial kitchens) to look at ways GUERNSEY could freeze, package, smoke, can or own fish to sell in the shops so we buy our own fish instead of imported. Has to be much greener and give new employment to those already in the food trade that may be looking at unemployment?

MAJ7124 ,

Way forward

An excellent initiative, gives me hope that we can come out of this crisis moving towards a greener and more sustainable future for our island community.
