Good but......
This pod is entertaining enough, giving the real story behind the fiction making it interesting. The host are engaging and erudite, however they do fall into a trap that is both as predictible in the current climate as it is disappointing, the demonisation of male characters.
I.e. Fictionalised real life male character behaves badly = Held to account and shamed for actions.
Fictionalised real life female character behaves badly = Poorly written female and/or mitigating circumstanes with excuses made for actions.
In The Social Newtwork episode the host mentioned she couldn't feel sorry for 'rich white men'. In this she has missed the point of the film entirely which is to challenge us to feel empathy for priveliged harvard types who may seem to have it all but are missing the real, emotional connections that make us human. As with most things, this podcast would be greatly improved were it to drop the identity politics and stick to the entertaining, informative information we continue to subscribe for.
Note, After listening to all of these pods so far and giving it more than a fair chance due to its interesting concept, I’ve unsubscribed. They constantly complain about the weakness of the female roles in the very movies they themselves have chosen to speak about. Perhaps they should consider covering a movie that does indeed have strong, well written female characters about which they could be positive and highlight their great work in the future.
