We Have Lift Off! | The Erasure of Distinctiveness Stereoplate

    • Books

This  episode is part of a series called We Have Lift Off! How to Launch a Literary Magazine in a Global Pandemic. This instalment is different in format and tone from episodes 1 & 2 and picks up from an idea in the last episode: Can you be  creative in a global pandemic?. It looks at what writer and academic Emma Smith calls 'the erasure of distinctiveness'. Martin and Jacqueline, an artist and writer, talk candidly about their own creative processes during lockdown - how they populated their work with portraits, people and ghosts at a time when most of us were unable to meet up with family and friends. They talk about the heartbreaking gravity of the fact that the deaths from Covid 19 were and still are seen by a wider world as statistics on a graph, and how they unwittingly found distinctiveness in their protraits and characters, and even erasure, in tacit response.

As editors of Brittle Star magazine, Jacqueline and Martin also share with you wonderful new and original poems and stories from issue 46. Listen to these writers read their own work in their distinctive voices. This episode helps celebrate 20 years of Brittle Star and includes  Alison Binney, Karen Green, SK Grout, Joan Lennon, Tina Cole, Kenneth Pobo and a sneaky-peek of a story by Janina Arndt.

So, join Martin and Jacqueline wherever you are in the world as they  share great writing with you, and try to shake off some of the mystery surrounding poetry and fiction.
