Inspiring Stories 039 - Becky Adlington OBE

Inspiring Stories 039 - Becky Adlington OBE

Inspiring Stories 039 - Becky Adlington OBE
Becky really does not need an introduction because her amazing track record precedes itself. I had a bit of a fan girl moment interviewing her because she is an English former competitive swimmer who won two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 400 and 800m freestyle. She was Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, and the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908. 4 years later she won bronze medals in both events in the London 2012 Olympics.
In this episode we talk about:
How despite being a two-time Olympic champion, she viewed swimming as selfish. The mental shift when she retired from swimming and went into business boardrooms, and just how amazing swimming is for transferrable leadership skills. Her mission to enable every child to gain the lifesaving skill of being able to swim and how she is going about making that difference in the world. Connect with Becky

Inspiring Stories 038 - Dan Fenwick
Dan is on a mission to standardise 'a life-enhancing recruitment experience'. His experiences as a child and transformation becoming a parent himself have led to the emergence of a man committed to finding purpose, in passionately and joyfully pursuing his potential – and carving a path for others to do the same.
Growing up in the UK seaside town of Morecambe required Dan to hustle his way through school and this entrepreneurialism has seen him climb sales leader boards, set up businesses and grow companies – namely in automotive, marketing services and management consulting.
Previously as MD of a leading management consultancy, CMO of a Berlin-based Leadership Development company, Founder of a community-driven physical and mental health and wellness CIC (Community Interest Company) and now Co-Founder at Venture 10 – Talent Matchmaking Specialists, Dan spends his time developing winning strategies, building all things Sales and Marketing – from systems, to teams, to brands – and coaching leaders to think bigger, be better and go bolder. You can connect with him on LinkedIn or email him directly.
In this episode we talk about:
How recruiters can help you in your career strategy and what information you should take to a potential recruiter. Why large organisations, not just small ones, outsource recruitment. What to look out for when aligning to a recruitment agency. Find out more:

I’m thrilled to introduce my next inspiring stories guest, Dr Faezeh Gholami. Fae has worked at IBM for nearly 7 years and is currently the STSM – Chief Architect for IBM zSystems I/O Development and Data Centre Connectivity.
Fae was one of over 70 attendees at Optica’s Level Up Leadership 4-day event in March 2023 which I facilitated and I was struck by her courage and willingness to be open about her experiences and tackle some of the more challenging topics within DEI.
In this episode we talk about:
    ·       Fae’s career pathway so far and the key decision-making moments.
    ·       How role models and agency are important for women in tech and engineering.

Nir Eyal writes, consults, and teaches about the intersection of psychology, technology, and business. Nir previously taught as a Lecturer in Marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford.

Nir co-founded and sold two tech companies since 2003 and was dubbed by The M.I.T. Technology Review as, “The Prophet of Habit-Forming Technology.” Bloomberg Businessweek wrote, “Nir Eyal is the habits guy. Want to understand how to get app users to come back again and again? Then Eyal is your man.”

He is the author of two bestselling books, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products and Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life.

Indistractable received critical acclaim, winning the Outstanding Works of Literature Award as well as being named one of the Best Business and Leadership Books of the Year by Amazon and one of the Best Personal Development Books of the Year by Audible. The Globe and Mail called Indistractable, “the best business book of 2019.”

How being distracted is a decision point and how to make time for traction instead based on your value system. Nir gives a much-needed formula for releasing the guilt of taking time to yourself. He gives an outstanding response to my final question on advice, alongside a very valuable answer to one of my community members on how to avoid doom scrolling when your place of work requires you to use two-factor authentication using your mobile.
