Your Mentor Didn't Mean It That Way Unleash Your Strengths w/ Eddie Villa

    • Personal Journals

In today’s episode, Eddie shares a personal experience when he had an employee quit because of something he said. He shares this experience to illustrate a lot of principles that can help anyone who is in a position of influence and is worried about people misinterpreting their words. In this experience, Eddie was surprised that in his efforts to offer words of encouragement to his employee, he actually drove him to quit. He points out that before his employee left, he should have asked him what it was that he thought that he had said. He then teaches the most important principle: that if you’re taking anything anyone says to you as disempowering, it’s not true. Eddie then invites you to choose 4 of your Clifton strengths, describe each one in 3 to 5 words, and put those descriptions together to motivate you to solve your problems today.

-Intro 0:54
-Eddie’s Experience; What He Would Have Done Differently 5:00
-If It Disempowers You, It’s Not True 15:09
-Eddie’s Challenge With Your Clifton Strengths 19:59

“So what I want you to do is think about this: when you’re listening to mentors, or friends, or anybody -- whether they’re an expert or not -- if what they said puts power into you, then believe it. Okay? If it puts you and keeps you in your business, then believe it. If you have a thought, or a feeling, or someone shares a story, or ANYTHING, that lets you believe that your strengths and talents are not perfect; if any thought that pops into your head that makes you think that you can’t do this, what you’re choosing to believe is a lie. And it’s time to put the power back into you.” 18:32
