Rebecca Vincent: International Freedom of the Press

Journalists across the globe are constantly having to navigate pressures and restrictions on their writing. In many cases this often results in a damaging infringement on freedom of speech. This is especially pertinent in light of the current global pandemic and the need for information to be accurately and freely shared.

On the show today is Rebecca Vincent: journalist, human rights activist, and Director of International Campaigns as well as the London bureau of reporters for Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières). Rebecca will be sharing some insights into the challenges facing reporters, with a special focus on the results of this year’s World Press Freedom Index.

Eduardo Suárez: Digital News Media and the Rise of Reader Revenue

It’s no secret that news media organisations are in danger. Falling advertising revenues and an accelerated shift to digital platforms are rapidly reshaping the work of journalists across the globe. Today on Insiders we ask - how should organisations be tackling these problems in 2020 and beyond?

Last year Eduardo published a report comparing case studies of news media organisations in the UK and his native Spain, in doing so highlighting the varying approaches to reader revenue models. We’ll be focusing on this report, touching on subscription best practices, the changing digital news landscape, and how COVID-19 will affect an already fragile industry.
