Patrick Lencioni joins Dr. Krish Kandiah for a conversation about his work as an author, speaker, consultant, and founder of The Table Group. Patrick shares about his quick success in life and how it quickly taught him that these things he was chasing didn’t actually matter. He realized that the worldly success he wanted was a reflection of a broken view of leadership he held; instead of being a leader to meet a need, he was driven by the desire to be seen as important. Thankfully, he recalls, God got a hold of him and showed him that pride was getting in the way of becoming the leader he was made to be.

Patrick discusses the importance of leaders serving those around them and not just waiting for retirement to become philanthropic or charitable. Patrick often has to remind executives that they will have more impact on their employees and their spouses and families than almost anyone else, so to impact in this world, they should start there. Dr. Krish Kandiah has the pleasure of interviewing New Testament Scholar and Bishop Tom Wright this week. They recorded this in the spring of 2020, a few months into the lockdown, shortly after Tom released his book God and the Pandemic. Tom unpacks some of the concepts from there, but then they also journey through a collection of other topics from Tom’s start in leadership, to Paul and Timothy’s styles of leading, why leaders should read intellectual works, and how we can process suffering in light of the global moment of COVID-19.

Tom dives deeper into how Paul was unique in that he was incredibly gifted in multiple ways and was an intersection of special traits that positioned him perfectly for the tasks Jesus gave him. He was a Roman citizen, fluent in Greek and Hebrew, culturally astute to both the broader society and also Judaism. Paul was also incredibly smart, driven as a leader, and capable of developing others different from him like Timothy. Sheila Heen, a senior lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School, joins Dr. Krish Kandiah to discuss her work in negotiations and conflict management and what leaders can take from her years of experience. When she started at Harvard Law School, Roger Fisher, famous for the Harvard Negotiation Project, took her under his wing and quickly immersed her into the world of negotiations and psychology.

Her experience brought her to a vast need in politics, business, charities, and families: how to resolve conflicts. This led to her writing Difficult Conversations, which was named one of the 50 most important books of psychology. Sheila explains to Krish that her work shows that people skills, critical to negotiations, is an essential leadership skill. Dr. Krish Kandiah is joined by Kevin Olusola, a member of the chart topping acapella group Pentatonix, to hear his story of life, music, and faith intersecting. Known for his “cello boxing” (playing the cello while beatboxing), he rose to fame as Pentatonix won the TV show The Sing Off and later became known for viral YouTube covers and fresh remakes of Christmas classics.

Kevin openly shares about what it is like to be a Christian in the music industry. What encourages him is the opportunity to be a light in dark places, which both the music industry and living in LA can feel like as a Christian. This mission is what helped inspire him to start Imagine LA, a community focused on bringing justice to cycles of family poverty and homelessness.

Paula Faris, author, podcaster, speaker, and former host of Good Morning America and The View joins Dr. Krish Kandiah to share about her career and faith. Paula opens up with Krish about the toll her career took on her, ultimately leading to her stepping back from the roles after a tragic chain of events in 2018 where she experienced multiple health issues. In reflection, Paula explains that what she didn’t realize until that moment, was that her career had slowly become her calling. Her identity and value became wrapped up in her career success and it led her towards overworking, compromising her Christian values, and neglecting the relationships with those she most loved. Paula tells Krish how it can be so easy for what happened to her to be the same experience for many leaders and people who are passionate about their work.

Andrew Morley, President and CEO of World Vision International, sits down with Dr. Krish Kandiah in this episode to share about his life, leadership and faith journey. Before joining the team at World Vision, Andrew worked for brands such as Google, Motorola, Sky Television, Harrods Group, Ford and Clear Channel UK. He is also currently an ordained minister curate at HTB Church in London where he serves on Sundays.

Over his career, Andrew has worked in numerous organisations and shares with listeners how he would make decisions on whether to stay or to go. He jokes that if he ever wrote a book, it would be on this idea of L.E.G.O. — love, experience, gifts, opportunities — a helpful framework that can guide people into their next season and calling.
