Colossians 1:1-8



Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your[c] behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.

2 O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,    and you will not hear?Or cry to you “Violence!”    and you will not save?3 Why do you make me see iniquity,    and why do you idly look at wrong?Destruction and violence are before me;    strife and contention arise.4 So the law is paralyzed,    and justice never goes forth.For the wicked surround the righteous;    so justice goes forth perverted.

5 “Look among the nations, and see;    wonder and be astounded.For I am doing a work in your days    that you would not believe if told.6 For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans,    that bitter and hasty nation,who march through the breadth of the earth,    to seize dwellings not their own.7 They are dreaded and fearsome;    their justice and dignity go forth from themselves.8 Their horses are swifter than leopards,    more fierce than the evening wolves;    their horsemen press proudly on.Their horsemen come from afar;    they fly like an eagle swift to devour.9 They all come for violence,    all their faces forward.    They gather captives like sand.10 At kings they scoff,    and at rulers they laugh.They laugh at every fortress,    for they pile up earth and take it.11 Then they sweep by like the wind and go on,    guilty men, whose own might is their god!”

4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
