FEATURING DORTELL WILLIAMS - This Sunday June 16 marks Father’s Day, a day when families celebrate their dads–biological or adopted, surrogate or chosen–to brunches and lunches, and make toasts in their honor.
But what about the thousands of fathers who are locked up in prisons around the country? Dortell Williams is one such father, currently serving a sentence of Life in Prison Without Parole (LWOP) at Mule Creek State Prison in California. Williams has been separated from his daughter since she was only two years old

Can Regeneratively Farmed Food Be the Answer to Good Health and Climate Justice?

FEATURING MOLLIE ENGELHART - A popular vegan-friendly restaurant chain in Southern California is under fire–from vegans. Sage Regenerative Kitchen, formerly known as Sage Vegan Bistro, announced earlier this year that it would be introducing some meat items to its menu. But it wouldn’t be just any meat, rather meat that was produced through what is called “regenerative farming.”
Sage’s chef and owner Mollie Engelhart has faced enormous backlash for saying that living off an exclusively plant-based diet won’t be enough to save the planet.

Indian Voters Deliver Blow to Modi and BJP

FEATURING AMANDEEP SANDHU - India, the world’s largest democracy, recently concluded its 6-week long election and delivered a blow to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whose leader Narendra Modi has been Prime Minister for the past decade. The BJP won 240 seats, a plurality, which still allows it to lead, but via a coalition government in India’s parliamentary system.
In 2014 and 2019 the party won landslide majorities but the nation of 1.4 billion people seems to have lost some of its appetite for Modi’s brand of rightwing Hindu-supremacist fundamentalism and neoliberal economic policies.

Biden’s New Border Policy Looks a Lot Like Trump’s

FEATURING LAURA FLORES-PERILLA - Just weeks before incumbent president, Joe Biden faces Donald Trump for their first pre-election debate, his administration announced it would adopt an order temporarily sealing off the U.S.-Mexico border and removing protections for asylum seekers.
According to the New York Times, “The order would be the most restrictive border policy instituted by Mr. Biden, or any other modern Democrat, and echoes an effort in 2018 by President Donald J. Trump to curb migration that Democrats assailed and federal courts blocked.” Biden plans to sign the order with great fanfare alongside mayors of border cities.

Tackling Political Amnesia Ahead of the November Election
Listen to story:

FEATURING TARA MCGOWAN - A new poll has found that about half of all independent voters and 15% of Republican voters want Donald Trump to suspend his campaign following his felony convictions on 34 counts. Ahead of the verdict, the New York Times studied a focus group of undecided independent voters and found that most were leaning toward Trump.
There appears to be a political amnesia about the years 2016 to 2020 and the breakneck speed with which scandals, attacks, ethical violations, and outright lies streamed out of the White House on a daily basis and how a violent mob almost succeeded in a coup on January 6, 2021.
What role has our media played in enabling Trump? How is the information divide undermining the U.S.? And what needs to happen between now and the election to shore up democracy?

What Trump’s Felony Convictions Mean

FEATURING COREY BRETTSCHNEIDER - Former President and soon-to-be Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump was convicted last week on 34 felony charges in a hush-money incident that took place ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Newspaper headlines screamed “TRUMP GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS” and media reports relied on superlatives such as “historic” and “unprecedented” to label the unanimous jury verdict. Given that Trump has been unusually adept at avoiding accountability for a staggering number of alleged crimes, the verdict caused shockwaves.
