Welcome to the Black Fatherhood podcast. This podcast has one purpose, to share with as many people the beauty and joy of black fatherhood. Media often portrays black fathers as lacking values and stability, always barely surviving and enveloped in violence.
This narrative perpetuates stereotypes but most powerfully omits the many stories of black fathers thriving. The omission of love, kindness, joy, and stability within narratives of black fatherhood is detrimental and a purposeful silencing of an existing reality.
The Black Fatherhood podcast is a counter-narrative. It is steeped in love and intentionally chooses a medium with the widest access. This is an artistic collaboration between myself and our host Jamaal Collier.

Black Fatherhood S01E02: Derrick Barnes: Being father and author
In this second episode of the Black Fatherhood podcast, we interview Derrick Barnes. He is the author of the critically acclaimed picture book CROWN: An Ode To The Fresh Cut (Denene Millner Books/Agate Bolden) which won a multitude of literary awards, making it one of the most decorated picture books in the history of children’s literature. The awards/prizes include two 2018 EZRA JACK KEATS AWARDS (one for New Writer and an honor for the magnificent illustrations). It was also a HUGE winner at the American Library Association’s Youth Media Awards, taking home FOUR Honor awards: the Coretta Scott King Author Honor, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, Newberry Honor, and the Caldecott Honor. In October of 2018, CROWN also took home the lucrative and highly coveted Kirkus Prize For Young Readers.

Black Fatherhood S01E01: Introducing our host.
Hello, in this episode we interview our host Jamaal Collier. He is a father, husband, and musician. He is a multidisciplinary performance artist and teaching artist who channels his art form through theatre, vocal percussion, emceeing (Rapping), singing, spoken word poetry and hosting events. His mission is always to communicate, entertain, enlighten, and grow with his audience. Root knows he has as much to learn from his performances as those who witness them.
