Nancy Birtwhistle, winner of The Great British Bake Off & host of new CW show The Big Bakeover

Nancy Birtwhistle, winner of The Great British Bake Off & host of new CW show The Big Bakeover

ABOUT NANCY BIRTWHISTLE AND THE BIG BAKEOVER, FRIDAYS AT 8PM ON THE CW

Bakery expert, business professional and author Nancy Birtwhistle has been baking for her whole life. Starting out alongside her grandmother, she honed her craft over the years eventually becoming the Season 5 winner ofThe Great British Bake Off. Now, Nancy is on a mission traveling across America to save struggling bakeries. With the help of her master carpenter, Erik Curtis, she reimagines and revamps recipes, renovates storefronts and puts passionate pastry makers on a path to success.  From Velvet Hammer Media, THE BIG BAKEOVER is executive produced by Rebecca Quinn, Jennifer O'Connell and Tim Warren.

    NANCY BIRTWHISTLE BIO

There's more to Great British Bake Off 2014 winner Nancy Birtwhistle than meets the eye. Birtwhistle is a self-taught home baker who only took up baking seriously when she retired from her full-time job as a practice manager for a GP's surgery. And, like everything she turns her hand to, she became rather good at it.

Full of energy and brimming with ideas, Birtwhistle's is a force of nature and whether it's growing her own fruit and vegetables to use in her recipes, rearing poultry (including the Christmas turkey), training her dog (who made it to Crufts) or getting a degree at age 40, she doesn't do things by halves.

Born and brought up in Hull and the surrounding areas, Birtwhistle's first memories of baking are Christmas baking with her grandmother. "I now realize that she did indeed have a significant part to play in my love of baking. She was a true home baker and never used a recipe book."

Through devouring books, taking tips and inspiration from people she meets and lots and lots of trial and error,Birtwhistle has acquired an incredible breadth of baking knowledge. She loves the creativity of baking and the simple rewards of watching others enjoy something she's baked. Now a grandmother herself, Birtwhistle is determined to pass on her skills and knowledge to the next generation and show people that with a little bit of time, a lot of patience and a few simple ingredients, you really can make a perfect showstopper.

Birtwhistle is a natural teacher and can regularly be seen giving demonstrations at large-scale food events. She has appeared at The Good Food Show, The Cake and Bake Show and countless regional food festivals. She is also an accomplished speaker who is comfortable telling her story to many audiences as diverse as the Women's Institute to a room of female banking staff.

Maurice Ashley - Move by Move: Life Lessons on and off the Chessboard

Maurice Ashley - Move by Move: Life Lessons on and off the Chessboard

ABOUT MAURICE ASHLEY AND MOVE BY MOVE

At age thirty-three, Maurice Ashley became the first Black chess Grandmaster. From his time as an immigrant kid playing matches in Brooklyn parks to the highest levels of competition, he has brought his love of the game to a wide audience as an educator, innovator, and motivational speaker.

Using both personal examples and anecdotes from other notable chess players, MOVE BY MOVE guides readers through the essential lessons that chess has taught Ashley about life including:

    - Seeing from the other person's viewpoint
    - Balancing sacrifices and risks
    - Embracing chaos
    - Learning from imperfections

In short chapters with practical takeaways, this book reaches from the fundamental to the counterintuitive on subjects ranging from self-knowledge to strategic thinking to the importance of failure. This little book of wisdom is the perfect gift for anyone interested in understanding how lessons from the most famous and long-lasting game of strategy can help you reach your personal and professional goals.

    ABOUT MAURICE ASHLEY

Maurice Ashley is a Chess Grandmaster, an ESPN commentator, a three-time national championship coach, and an author. In 1999 he earned the title of Chess Grandmaster, making him the first Black Grandmaster in the game's history, and in 2016 he was inducted into the US Chess Hall of Fame. He lives in Florida.

    ABOUT MOVE BY MOVE

This is a collection of the most compelling life lessons chess has taught me over the past forty years. You'll learn how to build a winner's mentality, how to analyze backwards to solve problems, why learning through loss is a key path to greatness, how to balance sacrifices and risk, and more. And maybe, most importantly, you'll learn that to get to the top of the mountain, you must first conquer yourself. I hope these lessons change your life the way they have changed mine.
