    The Struggle to Challenge Racist Behavior in America - The Haitian-American Perspective

    In this episode, Haitian-American poet Charlot Lucien explores some of the factors - historical and current - that explain how Haitian-Americans relate to the current struggle to challenge racist behavior in the US and its impact on black productivity?

    Charlot Lucien is a Haitian storyteller, poet and visual artist and media personality who resides in the state of Massachusetts in the USA since the early nineties. He is also the founder and director of the Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts which started in 1995 to promote Haitian culture. He has been active in the artistic and cultural arena going back to the late eighties in Haiti, and since the nineties in New-England both in the Haitian and the American communities. Charlot Lucien uses visual arts, poetry and storytelling in three languages, as artistic expressions, instruments of awareness among his compatriots and across various cultures. As a Director of the Haitian Artists Assembly, he brings together artists to produce artworks that challenge negative narratives and stereotypes about Haiti. As a storyteller, he has released four storytelling CDs in Haitian Creole and French that have been well received by established critics in Haiti and the Haitian Diaspora and used in educational settings in Haiti and the US. As an author, His book of poetry “La tentation de l'autre rive” was published in October 2013 by Trilingual Press of Cambridge MA and he has coordinated the release of the art anthology "Migrating Colors: Haitian Art in New England", in 2018.

    Charlot Lucien has presented readings and performances in cultural and academic venues in multiple U.S. cities, Canada, Haiti, Guadeloupe, France and England and his creative works - paintings, poetry, and storytelling - have been featured in various newspapers in Haiti and abroad. He is the recipient of multiple awards from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, The 1804 Haitian American-Change Makers List and several organizations for his cultural advocacy and productions. He has or has been on the board of organizations involved in rebuilding efforts in Haiti, including the think-tank “Groupe de Réflexion et d'Action pour une Haiti Nouvelle” (GRAHN-USA), the United Front of the Haitian Diaspora, the Haitian Americans United Inc (HAU), EDEM Foundation, Haiti Projects, among others.


    In his regular line of work, Charlot Lucien is a Public Health Manager for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts where he oversaw funding and services for organizations in the areas of HIV/AIDS, refugee and immigrant health, and disaster response.
