Welcome to Adventures in SLIGHTLY Above Average Parenting. I’m Max’s Mom. That’s not the name I was born with but it seems to be the name that is sticking the most these days so I’ve CLAIMED IT! I’m Max’s Mom, the artist formerly known as Candice. I’m the proud mother to a year of the dragon, Gemini, I’ve been here before, 7 going on 45-year-old boy named Maximus Chase. He is the joy of my heart, the source of my greys and the reason I drink occasionally. In addition to being his mom, I consider myself a community mom. What does that mean? That means, I try to be what I had and needed to the village/posse I’ve built. Guess what, you are all part of that posse now. I shall call us, the parent posse. Aside from being a mom, I’ve lived the life of a licensed teacher and actor. This trifecta allows me to be an edutainer. Don’t judge me, I spend most of my time with little people. I’ve realized, parenting is a daily adventure filled with stories. Some funny, some heavy and some that leave you in tears. Kids don’t come manuels and we are all doing our best to get by. As we go on this adventure called parenting, it is better together, in community. So welcome to mine. Join me as I tell stories from my friends, myself and maybe some of yours of the lessons learned on this adventure of slightly above average parenting. Why Slightly above average. Well come on if we did exceptional parenting all the time, they would have nothing to complain to their therapist to in the future.

In addition to our weekly stories, I will drop a mini episode with an educational suggestion to help, hopefully, load your parenting toolbox to help your little people make developmental and academic gains.

I’m so excited to have you join me on this adventure of SLIGHTLY above average parenting. And if you are having a bad parenting day, remember, the mom on ET had an alien living in her house for days and never even noticed. Just saying. If you’re doing better than that, you are already winning. Be kind to yourself!!!! and I will chat with you soon.

    An Athletic Attitude - Episode 8

    Wonder-August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a severe facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school.
    Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face. Wonder begins from Auggie's point of view, but soon switches to include the perspectives of his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These voices converge to portray a community as it struggles with differences, and challenges readers, both young and old, to wonder about the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness.

It's funny when it happens in the commercial. Join me as I recount my personal bleachable moment and my unreasonable response. Sometimes, you just have to laugh at yourself.

    @bondingwithabook Suggestions:
    Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn for Kids by John C. Maxwell
    "Wendy and Wade love to play their favorite sport--Woggleball--and, like most kids, they like to win. But after a disappointing loss leaves Wendy and Wade ready to quit, they turn to their grandpa for advice. Papa tells them:"Woggles are winners, yes, that much is true. But whether you win depends upon YOU. Winning takes effort, this much you will see. What you learn from your loss can bring victory!"
    In Sometimes You Win--Sometimes You Learn for Kids, #1 New York Times bestselling author, coach, and motivational teacher John C. Maxwell adapts his inspiring life lessons for the youngest readers, showing kids that having the right attitude will help them turn any loss into a win."

    This book is a wonderful way to help children learn a growth mindset and learn from losses. Things are always as easy as they seem and even in loss, there is a lesson to be learned.

    Parenting Toolbox suggestion:
    I want to introduce you to THE STORYCRAFTERS. They are our favorite storytellers. When I say that their stories are engaging, often involve catchy tunes and you will enjoy them as much as your little one, I am not exaggerating the truth. They are a storytelling duo that does live storytelling performances but don’t worry, you don’t have to travel to experience the magic. They have downloadable CDs. We own three and are ready to purchase our 4th. Max’s Favorite CD is “More Classics with a Twist” specifically the story of “Caballito (Little Horse)” AND “A Tale for All Season” specifically “The Squash Vine”. My favorite CD is “The Yarms of Brothers Grimm” specifically the story of “The Queen Bee” and “The Goats and the Bear” but I have stories on the other CDs I love. Now, each CD is the cost of one large cup of a fancy cup of coffee with flavor but trust me it’s worth it.

    Now, why am I suggesting a storytellers CD. There are many benefits to children listening to stories. 1) it engages their imagination. With there being no pictures or words, kids are forced to rely on their listening and comprehension skills. 2) they are exposed to words they can’t decode independently yet. Think of it as audio reading. 3) and certainly not least, they develop the skill to sit and attend for extended periods of time. Stories range from 7 minutes to 25 minutes. Being able to sit and listen for time to a single task is a skill that will serve them well in school. Let me know what you think and how your little ones respond to it.
