Welcome to episode 5 of our series on travels of ibn battuta. In this episode, we'll look into Ibn Battuta's journey through the Arabian lands to fulfil his Hajj's religious obligation.
 
The Qur'an, Sura III states:
The first House established for the people was that at [Mecca], a place holy and guidance to all beings. Therein are clear signs — the station of Abraham, and whosoever enters it is insecurity. All men towards God must come to the House a pilgrim if he is able to make his way there.

On 1 September 1326 (or it may have been the 10th), Ibn Battuta set out, now for the second time in four months, to fulfil that "desire long-cherished" in his heart.

Welcome to episode three of our series on travels of Ibn Battuta. In this episode, we will look into his journey across the region of North Africa or commonly known as the Maghreb in the Islamic World.

If you have not completed the previous two episodes, we suggest you do so before starting this episode and with that said let's dive into today's episode.
An Arab scholar of Islam, social scientist, philosopher and historian who has been described as the founder of the modern disciplines of historiography, sociology, economics, and demography, Abd Ar Rahman bin Muhammed ibn Khaldun, famously said:
"A scholar's education is greatly improved by travelling in quest of knowledge and meeting the authoritative teachers (of his time)."
On 14 June 1325 Ibn Battuta rode out of Tangier and headed southeastward through the Eastern Rif's highlands to join the main caravan road that ran from Fez to Tlemcen. He was 21 years old and eager for more learning, and more adventure, than his native city, could hope to give him.

A Muslim physician, philosopher, historian, Arabic grammarian, traveller, and one of the most voluminous writers in the Near East of 11th century, Abd al-Latif al-Baghdadi, famously said:
"The learned man is esteemed in whatever place or condition he may be, always meeting people who are favourably disposed to him, who draw near to Him and seek his company, gratified in being close to him."
