Amber Smith
One must respect Amber Smith’s military service & civilian experience at a high level in the Pentagon.
However, her insights on the Afghanistan situation lacked substance & credibility.
For example, when asked about the strategic implications of the Afghanistan debacle, she averred that “China would take advantage” and made vague references to emboldening the Chinese to increase pressure on Taiwan due to apparent American incompetence.
That is fair enough, but the immediate strategic implications must include the presumption of much improved Chinese access to the vital mineral resources found in Afghanistan, such as lithium and other rare minerals, and the much more critical danger of the possibility of the “Islamic nuclear weapon” becoming a reality in the absence of a meaningful U.S. military presence in the region if the Taliban form a close geopolitical relationship with Pakistan. That is not to mention the complexity of Chinese oppression of the Xinjiang Muslims and how that filters into Chinese-Taliban-Pakistani relations.
It would be much appreciated if The Federalist could do its usual excellent work to bring to listeners the insights of more serious analysts & commentators on the above topics rather than the superficial treatment (or complete absence of mention) given to them by Ms. Smith.
I offer these mildly critical comments not as a slight against Ms. Smith but as an exhortation to The Federalist to perform to its usual high standards in explaining & exploring the practical strategic implications of the Afghan collapse.
With best wishes.
