Upwards of 50,000 people are expected to line the shores of Ala Moana Beach Park Monday night as candle-lit lanterns are set afloat in the annual Shinnyo Lantern Hawaii ceremony to remember loved ones lost. The organization said this year’s theme is “Many Rivers, One Ocean.” Organizers said they hope the ceremony can offer a space, physical and emotional, for residents and visitors to experience a sense of comfort and healing.

HNN News Brief (May 27, 2024)
A 77-year-old man is in critical condition after a crash Sunday morning in Ewa Beach. Police say the man was on a moped in the area of Ft. Weaver and Renton Roads when he pulled out in front of a truck, that investigators say had the right of way. Neither the driver or the passenger in that truck were hurt.

A Hawaii Island child psychologist who admitted to sexually assaulting a teen patient and is under investigation in other cases was sentenced Friday to 20 years behind bars — double what prosecutors had sought under a plea deal. Reuben Lelah pleaded guilty to to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old patient. A judge Friday sentenced Lelah to two, 10-year sentences — to be served back to back.
