New Horizons Life Skills is a Nashville nonprofit agency that has supported adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for over 50 years since 1971. This podcast is a platform to discuss topics surrounding the greater disability community, particularly focusing on education, self-advocacy, and awareness.Each day we operate according to our mission: to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by advocating for their rights and dignity, providing person-centered services and programs, and ensuring their independence through meaningful work, living conditions, and access to the community. This podcast will be a place for individuals from diverse backgrounds and with unique abilities to share their victories, challenges, and stories with the world. We hope you enjoy it!

Recapping Disability Day on the Hill
Peach and Dylan join us this week to reflect on Disability Day on the Hill (DDH). Disability Day on the Hill is organized by the TN Disability Coalition and various provider agencies, it is a day for self-advocates and allies to speak with state lawmakers about topics and bills impacting the disability community! While DDH 2021 looked a little different this year as all meetings were virtual, Peach and Dylan dive into the bills that were discussed with state legislators with our Manager of Development, Lee Sherwood.

Celebrating Down Syndrome with Alice Sally
This week Alice Sally joins us on the New Horizons Life Skills podcast! Alice Sally is the leader of the Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee's (DSAMT) Young Professionals Board, but most of all she is the mother to an amazing daughter, Emeline, who was born with Down syndrome.
Alice joins our Manager of Development, Lee Sherwood, as they discuss what Down Syndrome is, how to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, and how DSAMT is impacting the local Middle Tennessee community.

Dara Bacon - 2020 Census
Update: Census deadline extended to Oct. 31!
This week, we are publishing our episode a little early in time to remind everyone that today is the last day to be counted in the 2020 Census! Dara Bacon joins us to discuss just why the census is so important for the disability community, her experiences as both a niece and a mother of a loved one with Down syndrome, and the importance of finding activities, like rock climbing, that force you to be completely present in the moment.
