Welcome to the Powerful Ally, a podcast that amplifies the work of both famous and everyday allies. An ally is a person of one social identity group who provides actionable support to members of another group. Typically, a member of the dominant group forms an alliance with members of marginalized groups being discriminated against or treated unjustly.

The goal is for you become an effective ally, feeling equipped to campaign, advocate and triumphantly challenge systems and structures of oppression, disadvantage, inequity, and exclusion, while overcoming the barriers of silence and inaction.

    Powerful Ally: Norman Lear

    Powerful Ally: Norman Lear

Gentry + Kenadie debate the allyship of Norman Lear. Does Norman qualify? Take a listen.

Norman Lear, a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors (2017) and the Golden Globes' Carol Burnett Award, changed television and American culture by introducing real-life issues that had been taboo, including race, sex, war – and even flushing toilets –  to a comedy genre previously rooted in silliness and escapism. The volatile mix of deadly serious topics and humor drew howls of opposition and of laughter, along with a bounty of awards and ratings.

"I emphasize the common humanity. To laugh at them and live with them for a half-hour is to share in their humanity," he said in 2017. Issues change over the decades, too, but humor remains a shared response, even in difficult situations, "because the foolishness of the human condition is a constant. It doesn't go away.”
