Mile Marker 1: Where do I stand with God (Romans 1:18-3:20)
Absolutely no one has a right standing before God because of the junk we carry in our bags.
Step 1: Repent – Do a U-Turn and acknowledge before God that you are guilty.

Mile Marker 2: How do I become a Christian? (Romans 3:21-5:21)
Step 2: Place your faith in Jesus (3:22)
    Mind the Gap (3:23)

Redemption = Payment to win our release (3:24b)
Substitutionary Atonement = Sufficient payment made by another. (3:25)

    Going Deeper
Mind the Gap: There is a gap in the Romans Road as wide as the Grand Canyon. No one can, by themselves, can get across it to the other side where a relationship with God resides. Do you see or feel the reality of the gap in your own life? What emotions does it stir up in you?
Share your story of when you “placed your faith in Jesus.” If you are not there yet, share where you are on the journey and what is holding you back from making this decision.
Which of the three words speaks the most to you of what Jesus did for us all?
    Justified (Legal)
    Redemption (Slavery)
    Substitutionary Atonement (Sacrifice of another)

Where Do We All Stand With God? | The Romans Road | Jason Morris

    As it is written:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;there is no one who understands;there is no one who seeks God.All have turned away, they have together become worthless;there is no one who does good, not even one.”“Their throats are open graves;their tongues practice deceit.”“The poison of vipers is on their lips.”“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”“Their feet are swift to shed blood;ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.”“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
    Romans 3:10-20
Admit we’re no better than anyone else.
    Acknowledge we are not perfect
    In what we say
    In what we do
Bottom line, we don’t fear God.
Accept we’re no worse than anyone else.
…he who is forgiven little, loves little
    Luke 7:47

Where Do Jews Stand With God? | The Romans Road | Randy Frazee

Where Do Jews Stand With God? | The Romans Road | Randy Frazee

The end destination of the Romans Road is a whole new world. (Revelation 21-22)
We will all get our bags checked at customs at the entrance of the new world to make sure that we aren’t bringing anything in that will be harmful to this new community. (Romans 2:16)
We need to deal with what is in our bags before we get to the checkpoint.
Religious insider’s bags won’t pass inspection either. (Romans 2:1-3)
The volume of sin in the bag is not the issue. Just a little contamination let into a pure country will eventually grow and destroy it.
No one can clean out their bags by trying to be good. (Romans 3:9-10, 20)
Repentance is admitting you are going in the wrong direction and doing a U-Turn. (Romans 2:5)

    Going Deeper Questions:
Tell your story growing up. Did you grow up in a religious home?
What do you think Paul means when he writes, “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” (Romans 2:13)
How do you feel about Paul’s declaration in Romans 3:10 that there is not even one righteous person?
In the Bible there are two words for “repentance”. One means, “I’m sorry”, the other means doing an “about face”. Paul uses the later word here in Romans 2:5. What is the difference?

Where Do Gentiles Stand with God? | The Romans Road | Randy Frazee

Where Do Gentiles Stand with God? | The Romans Road | Randy Frazee

“Dear Lord, your word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. We take this journey together, down the Romans Road, knowing the destination is You. In Jesus Name, Amen”

Paul is going to first address this question to the person who did not grow up in a religious home. (1:18-20)
Paul is saying that even though we can’t see God, evidence of his existence is so clear in creation alone that all people are without excuse.

Arguments for the existence of God, apart from the Bible:
Creation – (Cosmological) The world around us is an “effect” that requires an adequate “cause”. The “uncaused cause.” Nature cannot originate itself. For something to create itself, it must exist and not exist at the same time.
Organization – (Teleological) The purpose, order and design we observe in the world calls for a designer.
Man – (Anthropological) It is one thing to create a living organism, but we possess intellect, emotions, a self-awareness, the ability to create and a sense of right and wrong. Evolution apart of God could not have produced a soul, the spirit. It is more logical and takes less faith to conclude God did this than chance.
Being – (Ontological) The fact that we have an idea of a most perfect being proves that he exists.

If the existence of God is so clear, why do so many people deny his existence? Paul said it is not a matter of evidence but a spiritual matter of the soul.

We suppress the truth because we don’t, in our sinful nature, like to submit to anyone, but live life like we see it – we want to do it our way. (1:24-32)

    God Suppressants

    Three Decisions:
I acknowledge that God exist, and I am not him.  Yes No   (circle one)
Because he exists, I must submit my life to him whether he is good or not.  Yes No (circle one)
I pray he is a good God.   Yes No (circle one)

    Going Deeper:
Which of the four arguments for the existence of God makes the most amount of sense to you? Is there something else, apart from the Bible, that confirms for you there is a God?
What do you think about “gossip” and “slander” being in the same list of God suppressants as homosexual acts and murder? How does engaging in these activities suppress the truth about God?
Share your answer of the three decisions with your group.
