#142 | 1 Samuel: The Childhood of Samuel and Jesus Part 1 OneLife Nashville: Rare but vital conversations about Jesus

    • Christianity

In this episode, we delve into the stark contrasts and parallel lives of Samuel and the sons of Eli, as depicted in 1 Samuel 2:11-18. Through a close reading, we uncover how these characters, all raised under the guidance of Eli the Priest, grew and developed in very different ways.

Samuel, while serving in the Tabernacle, was not only influenced by Eli but was apparently also shaped by his awarenes of the presence of the Lord, as well as the strong faith of his mother, Hannah. This episode explores how Samuel's service in the Tabernacle and proximity to the presence of God, as well as his mother's character, would have played a part in shaping Samuel's growth and development in a way that would have led him to become a different kind of person than Eli's other sons.

For example, the sons of Eli, described as "sons of Belial" — a term signifying worthlessness and corruption — obviously succumbed to negative influences that led them to become evil and wicked. Despite sharing the same physical space as Samuel, and doing the same activities in the Tabernacle, their developmental journeys significantly diverged.

We end the episode by noticing a parallel between Samuel's childhood development and Jesus' childhood development un the Gospel of Luke. Like Samuel, Jesus' childhood development was influenced by those beyond his earthly family, namely, God the Father, which uniquely developed him in ways that led him down a different developmental path than his brothers and other Israelites.
