This week I got to sit down and discuss the evolution of training during the pandemic with Michael Kelley. After a quick run down of how he got to Grove City College we dive right into how this unique time has brought them to come up with unique ways to get their athlete’s in to train. This included them moving parts of their weight room to create a second space to accommodate to their 480 student athletes. This includes how the rules in D3 have made it even more challenging, but has also helped identify teams that are truly invested and have better cultures. We then discuss how they bucketed their athletes in different “levels” to allow them to use their different facilities to do the best they could for the athletes. Make sure you give him a follow on IG and Twitter @kelleysmash.

My Thoughts Monday #178- Jay DeMayo- Identifying Direction in Programming

My Thoughts Monday #178- Jay DeMayo- Identifying Direction in Programming

“When you have an actual why, and you have your direction, and you have your goals, and you make them known, you now can have legitimate conversations with people and truly audit every aspect of the program.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

You need to know your why has become a trendy statement in coaching. This stems mostly around the importance of the relationships we need to build with the athletes, coaches, and staff we get to work with every day. Our why can also include the why to what we are doing when it comes to programming. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share with you a way that I’ve reevaluated how we are setting up our program, and why having a true why driving the entire program has really helped us (hopefully) improve our progressions within the GPP phase of our program.

Episode 277- Frank Barone- Going In Reverse To Move Forward

Episode 277- Frank Barone- Going In Reverse To Move Forward

“If your principle is always to allow them to get better at their sport than sometimes we have to take a step back from what we find to be important.”

In this weeks episode of The Podcast I have the pleasure to sit down with Frank Barone to discuss the organization of the training process. After a run down of how he got up to Pittsburgh we get right into the process of building a team from scratch and some of the unique challenges associated with that. He then goes into the programming process and how he reverse engineers the game, while looking at similarities across different sports to help provide positive transfer to the sport. Frank shares with us some great insight on how he breaks down these movements, and how he looks at individual movements through a slightly different lens to help improve how we can structure our training weeks to better impact performance. We finish off discussing where we see our role change from the offseason to the in season, and where we both feel that performance coaches can do better to help the athletes and sport coaches. Frank puts out a lot of great content so make sure to give him a follow on instagram @coach_frankb.

My Thoughts Monday #177- Jay DeMayo- Your Focus Leads To Success or Failure

My Thoughts Monday #177- Jay DeMayo- Your Focus Leads To Success or Failure

“The more you focus on things in a positive manner, the better chance you have of getting to them.”

In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I reflect on the last book I read during this round of the 75 Hard Program, and that is Andy Frisella’s book on the program, 75 Hard. In his book he has a great Q and A section where he discusses different different ways people sabotage their ability to reach their goals. This has sparked a couple new thought processes for me when it comes to developing and progressing the programs for each individual athlete. This, HOPEFULLY, will increase “buy-in” for each athlete, thus improving the results of said training program.
