ITI Mix 017: Justin Robertson Insult To Injury Mix Series

    • Music

Christmas has come early at ITI Towers! After a "not very good" year (you may substitute this description for: fucking disastrous, if you so wish), we're delighted to be rounding it off with an addition to our mix series from style icon, Acid-House legend and visual artist-extraordinaire, Justin Robertson, Esq. Now, if only we can persuade him to put on around 8 stone, age 20 years overnight and grow his beard long, the festive experience will be complete...

For those that don't know, Justin was one of the pioneering talents that brought Acid-House to the fore in early 90's Manchester with his club nights Spice and Most Excellent, which he threw at various venues in the city, including the seminal Hacidena. This propelled him into the DJ limelight where he became a musical phenomenon at parties up and down the country like Bugged Out!, Cream, Heavenly Social, Bestival, Glastonbury, The Warehouse project and many others. Basically, anywhere good over the last thirty years!

His remix back catalogue is a who's who of culture, including, but not limited to: Bjork, New Order, Happy Mondays, Bryan Ferry, Noel Gallagher, Felix Da Housecat, Paul Weller, Erol Alkan & Boys Noize and Andrew Weatherall. Not content with this already high level of output, the ever-overachieving Justin decided to become a proper, bona-fide pop star by forming the band Lionrock and scoring a top 20 hit on the UK charts!

Since then he’s added many more strings to his bow with innovative shows on Soho Radio, putting out music with long-time collaborator Daniel Avery, touring with The Chemical Brothers, a plethora of solo EP’s and albums, the latest of which was released via Brighton institution, Skint Records. He is also the mastermind behind cult act Revtone, he’s collaborated with Tim Burgess and written songs for two Fatboy Slim albums… impressed yet?

In recent years our Justin has diversified even further by moving into the visual art world and has exhibited his beautiful paintings, sketching and photographs around Europe. There is, seemingly, no end to the mans talents…

As such, we are utterly thrilled to welcome JR to the ITI mix series! His DJ sets and mixes have been an inspiration over the years, and what he has recorded for us here is an impressive addition to that cannon. At a time when we all need a bit of positivity in our lives, Justin has kindly provided a two hour expedition into the left-field side of electronic music for the dance floor, filled with joy.
Merry Christmas, one and all!
