Balls on Film Episode #01: She's The Man

Balls on Film Episode #01: She's The Man

On the first-ever episode of Balls on Film, Colm Ahern and Andrew Knowles turn their attention to one of Amanda Bynes' last ever movies, She's The Man.
Released in 2006, She's The Man tells the story of a girl who poses as her brother in order to get on the school soccer team... except it's not her school's soccer team. It's her brother's school soccer team. Just listen to the episode and let us explain.
Sure, it's a teen comedy based on William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, but it's also a film designed to address gender norms and inequalities. It does it well. Sometimes. Then, other times, it shows itself as a movie made fifteen years ago.
While a Puskas Award level goal is scored in the film, there are a couple of inaccuracies in the portrayal of the sport. Namely the fact that the referee refuses to carry his cards with him. Very silly.

Introducing Balls on Film: A Sports Movie Podcast

Introducing Balls on Film: A Sports Movie Podcast

    We're baaaaaaaaaaack!
Balls on Film is a podcast about movies about sport. If that’s something you’re interested in, then, make sure you join Colm Ahern and Andrew Knowles -- who you may know from The Football Huddle -- every second week as they review some of the best (and some of the worst) sports movies around.
From the greatness of Any Given Sunday to the shoddiness of Semi-Pro, they’ll dissect the performances, themes, and each movie’s depiction of sport. In our first episode we’ll be reviewing 2006’s football-themed teen romcom, She’s The Man.

#200: Liverpool, Champions League Winners 2018-19

#200: Liverpool, Champions League Winners 2018-19

A dodgy penalty and a Divock Origi strike help Liverpool to Champions League glory, in a horrible final against Spurs, in Madrid. Does that quality matter, though? And where does Poch go from here?
As well as that, we look at Eden Hazard's performance in Chelsea's 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Europa League final, and whether Sarri is out the door.
Thank you for getting your friends on board to listen to Colm, Andrew, Dan, Stephen, and Sully over the last 200 episodes of The Football Huddle. You're all wonderful people. Mwah xxx

#199: Premier League 2018-19 Season Review

#199: Premier League 2018-19 Season Review

The Premier League is over and that means it's time for The Football Huddle to dissect the season's events.
Man City are Premier League champions; Liverpool narrowly miss out on glory after heroics from Van Dijk and co; did Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Man United have good seasons or not?
Huddersfield, Cardiff City and Fulham are relegated; was Xherdan Shaqiri the signing of the season? Did West Ham flop? Did Angus Gunn surprise? We attempt to answer all these questions and more.
And it's time for the final Win, Lose or Draw. You already know how it turned out, don't you?
Get your friends on board and listen to Colm, Andrew and Dan every week. This is the football podcast everyone needs.

    #198: Back and 4th

    #198: Back and 4th

Liverpool cut it fine, but a Divock Origi late winner against Newcastle saw them jump Man City (at least until they play Leicester). Crystal Palace prove too much for Warnock and Cardiff as they'll be playing in The Championship next year. And Spurs and Chelsea have ended up in the top four, but we're not sure anyone knows how.
Paul Merson's Marvellous Misadventures features Bielsa on spygate 2.0, and Eden Hazard in a car.
And Win, Lose or Draw sees Colm pick up an important win as we near the end of the season.
