Science washing: decoding scientism in the beauty industry

Science washing: decoding scientism in the beauty industry

In the latest episode of Green Beauty Conversations, we delve into the “science washing” that is rife in the beauty industry. This term, akin to its near neighbour “greenwashing”, refers to the use of scientific jargon to mask pseudoscientific ideas.
Last week, podcast host Lorraine Dallmeier, CEO of Formula Botanica, explored the nuances of so-called “medical-grade skincare” with Ana Green, Education Manager at Formula Botanica. They unpacked its role as a marketing term, and how its hype often misleads consumers about the quality and real efficacy of skincare products.
In this opinion episode, Lorraine unravels the broader implications of scientism or “science washing” in the beauty industry.

Listia Manurung ,

Perfect explanation!!

I studied biochemistry in uni and have passion in cosmetics. I always has my eyes set on natural skincare and look carefully at their labels. I agreed that sometimes some products have 'ridiculous' labels like: chemical free (everything is chemical even drinking water); gluten free (it's hard to find gluten protein in cosmetics products); or organic for coconut oil. I understand it now, that it's part of branding and marketing strategies, and chemist uses different terms from non-chemist people. This podcast really gives perfect guide if you want to start your green beauty industry: the shades of natural ingredients, how to label your product wisely, and formulate your products based on cosmetics regulations. All of these things are packed perfectly in 3 episodes, not too long and very clear explanation. Briliant!
