Hello, so I've done a new DJ set, with a load of my favourite stuff at the moment, which as always covers a lot of ground musically, but is hopefully still grounded in some sort of thread of warmth and flow. Full tracklist below.

Max Cooper - Synesthetes Museum
A mix based on the British Museum

Featuring a mix of 12th century Tibetan monks song, one of the first ever recordings of music, made by Thomas Edison on a wax cylinder in 1888, poetic spoken word, 9th century Gregorian Chant, A call to the lama from afar, some unreleased exclusives, 9/8 techno, traditional Chinese music mixed with rude glitch, and a binaural museum.

The brief for this mix was to make something inspired by an architectural space. When I was doing my Post-Doc at UCL I used to go the British Museum to relax, and work in the beautiful library there, so I chose the space for the mix. I wanted to capture the ambient atmosphere in the central courtyard, so I did some binaural recording to include in the mix. I also wanted to make the mix something of an exploration through history and ideas in line with the contents of the museum, so I brought in lots of disparate music spanning the centuries and continents. I also mixed it in a way to be like a journey though the museum, turning corners and regularly coming across something totally different and unexpected, with each track being like a different exhibit. Hence the name of the mix, in that, each piece of music almost has a visual content.

My approach for this mix was defined by the fact that I had to do it while travelling for my Americas tour. So I picked out a selection of my favourite tracks before leaving, and was constrained to use only these. The difficulty was that I had chosen a load of different genres, so it turned into a puzzle of how to fit them all together into some sort of coherent flow. It was a good way to work in the end as it encouraged me to make edits of lots of the tracks, and also lead to some nice unexpected combinations.

This is a live set I made for Dour Festival in Belgium, which I will be playing at on the 12th of July. Resident Advisor podcast 281: Max Cooper.

Techno with a touch of the cinematic.

It seems somehow clumsy to say it, but the defining feature of Max Cooper's music is melody. And glitch. But mainly melody. The UK artist has been DJing since the late '90s, turning his hand to production around the middle of the '00s as a way of generating more bookings. It worked. Cooper has produced music for a number of European labels since making his entrance, although Cologne's Traum Schallplatten has by far been his preferred home: No less than ten releases bearing his name have seen the light of day over the last couple of years, including soaring club hits such as "Harmonisch Serie." This prolific form has translated to Cooper's live show, in which he regularly twists out his material from Ableton and an APC40 for up to two hours.

As if to further emphasize the point, RA.281 showcases no less than five unreleased Max Cooper productions, forming the spine of a mix that through artists like Ben Frost, Tim Hecker, Amon Tobin and Underworld presents a panoramic view of Cooper's tastes and influences.
